335315 2005-03-18 18:43:00 These answers comparing Windows built-in cleanups with other programmes relate to Windows XP... and we're not all that mod....
So how about the defrag abilities of Win98(SE), for instance?
(Once you've worked out how to stop it telling you it's started 10 times & is now giving up, that is)

Though XP is mentioned these things work with Win98SE, Laura.

There is an improvement to be made by using the defrag and scandisk from Win ME in Win 98SE, there is info on this and links to get the files on Axcels tricks site:

You start in safe mode with 98 SE .

Then defrag . That way, it wont have programs running in the background, and defrag wont restart all the time .

Thats why it stops and restarts all the time (if u boot normally in Windows) .

Its detecting programs running in the background, and when it detects something, it restarts like u said .

See my post above for Geodisc 2. I have 98 SE and it works a treat.

335318 2005-03-18 21:43:00 Actually, you don't have to defrag win98 in Safe Mode, in fact it is a bit of a pain as icons can get scrambled because the screen reverts to 640x480. Try to minimise the number of programs running at start up, many are unecessary, also many programs love to instal icons in the system tray, so temporarily shut them down from there. Big culprits are screen savers and programs like ICQ and antivirus.
I dont actually ever defrag W98 from Safe Mode.

Well true. but that's only coz youre in safe mode. And the videocard drivers dont install.

Once u defrag and reboot, everything goes back to normal.

335320 2005-03-18 22:48:00 I really meant the icons can get scrambled after getting back into the original screen resolution after restarting, if auto arrange is off, and you have a desktop ful of icons. Terry Porritt (14)

I pulled in Geodisk 2, and as soon as I try to use one of its functions, Win 98SE seizes up ....
Did the defrag with Fixit utilities ....
