335187 2005-03-18 01:58:00 Did you test the other laptop on the same phone line and cable?

Yes . Same cable .

The ISP phone number, etc . - all OK .

Line noise . . . . the laptop was working A-OK yesterday .

Still not getting a dial tone - I can hear a click in the laptop speakers but not the usual dial tone; then Error 680 tells me what I already know: No dial tone .

Will be back here on PF1 Sunday evening or Monday morning .

Thanks for all the suggestions .

335188 2005-03-18 02:05:00 You could try deleting the modem out of "device manager", restarting and then let windows discover it again and load the drivers. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
335189 2005-03-18 02:06:00 Somewhere in the modem setup procedure it might ask what country you are in.(Or it might pick that up from the OS). I suspect that the default country would be the US, (after all, that's the Whole World ;)) I don't use XP, and haven't set up a modem in any MS Windows for a long time. ;) But someone will know.

Of course, there is a simple thing which we haven't considered yet. Does the exchange send a dial tone when the modem goes "off hook"? Make sure the modem speaker is on and try connecting. The modem might be quite correct.

335190 2005-03-18 02:22:00 Before I discovered that the DUN to my ISP was using the wrong modem description that didn't seem to be interfacing with the hardware properly, I tried Hyperterminal and found that the modem hardware was OK dialling using AT commands. If the exchange sees an off hook it will send dial tone just as the fridge light does go out when the door closes :-) PaulD (232)
335191 2005-03-18 02:29:00 I know that. :( But it has to see an off hook condition. Sometimes the fridge light doesn't go out. Sometimes it never goes on. Bulbs fail. Switches fail. Wires break. Hardware isn't immortal.

But that was just an afterthought. Perhaps the "International" settings of the computer is the place to look. I'm sure many people just set the time and date and never touch the Country setting.

335192 2005-03-18 02:36:00 Whenever I have come across this problem and been unable to fix it any other way I have always had success with removing the modem itself, rebooting Windows, reinstalling the modem and letting Windows detect it and install the drivers. Being a laptop, though, I can't imagine how you would be able to do this. FoxyMX (5)
335193 2005-03-18 02:39:00 That's easy, Susan .
