335407 2005-03-18 09:40:00 Hi All

I'm trying to connect to the above router with a realtech 1839 NIC
suse can see the NIC .
Ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
inet6 addr: fe80::fdff:ffff:feff:ffff/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:4294967129 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0 . 0 b) TX bytes:0 (0 . 0 b)
Interrupt:5 Base address:0x6000

I assume this is OK . I just can't for the life of me know where to go to set everything up .

I have gone to YaST / Network devices/ Already configured devices
Realtek RT1839 Configured with DCHP .

Tryed to connect with Konquorer as per router instructions 192 . 186 . 1 . 2 but comes up with not found .

I had Mandrake 10 working with a modem sweet as .

Please Help

335408 2005-03-18 09:52:00 Is the router set to use DHCP?

Your ifconfig eth0 output shows that you haven't an IP assigned. It should have a line similar to this with your IP, Broadcast and Subnet Mask IP:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:18:FF:F7:42
inet addr:192.168.1.2 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::2e0:18ff:feff:f742/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
Have another look at the network config in YaST and make sure all the details are correct.

335409 2005-03-18 09:59:00 Sorry forgot to mention the router is working excellent with a seperate machine running Win XP Home with ethernet connection. Also the one I'm having trouble with is dual boot with Win 98se and a USB interface into the router which is working good too.

Its just the NIC that won't work in Linux and the router
Also have tryed two different ethernet cables just in case one was kaput.

P.S as you can tell I'm also a linux noobie :@@:

335410 2005-03-18 10:01:00 Its just the NIC that won't work in Linux...

As jen points out, the reason the NIC is not going is that it currently does not have an IP address. Where is your DHCP service running from?

335411 2005-03-18 10:09:00 As root, run:
dhcpcd

lsmod will tell you which modules are loaded, Im pretty sure you mean a Realtek 8139 card. Try:

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
echo "nameserver 192.168.1.1" > /etc/resolv.conf

That will manually assign an IP Address, see if it works :)

335412 2005-03-18 17:57:00 reading your second post, does it say that youi are connected to the router with USB from the SuSE box, if that is so then that is your problem, use a ethernet cable and all your problems will go away, the DSE router comes with USB drivers for Windows only, Linux don't like networking via USB robinm (7292)
335413 2005-03-18 21:14:00 After a few choice words to my beloved Linux box, a few cups of coffee and following above instructions it is finally done .

I can connect to the router but unable to connect to the net .
Is there anything else I have to do?

Much Appreciated
Phar

P . S . here is the ifconfig eth0 dump

335416 2005-03-18 23:03:00 Well one significant thing is that, from the original posting, the NIC was not being seen at that point. A HWAddress (MAC) of FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF is not valid. Therefore it wasn't being given an IP address. Therefore eth0 wasn't working. Thus the overrruns. (It's a bit odd that eth0 was being shown at all). Graham L (2)
