336181 2005-03-20 12:49:00 Hi all,

I have a stick problem with a Mates computer

Windows XP SP1 . Every time to try to open a program it asks for you to choose which user you want ie currentUser or Administrator, then the program runs . However Many programs wont run and windows helpfully asks if you have permission .

If you Choose Admin, it throws a wobbly and claims you have insufficient rights .

The defaultUser is part of the Administrators Group .

When I go into Users in the control panel (Asks for which user permission) and try to turn off login screen and fast user switching, it claims that another user is logged on and this cant be done while that are logged in . (No connection to the Internet or a lan)

Cant add or remove programs insufficient permissions . Checked the local security policy and cant find anything out of place .

Can log in as Admin under safe mode but it refuses to allow any changes still .

Could just reinstall but I would like to solve the problem .

Perhaps they have a Virus? Norton’s still working, definitions updated .

Any ideas greatly appreciated .

Thanks all! :D

336182 2005-03-20 16:26:00 Administrator should not have insufficient rights unless SYSTEM is controlling the program. For starters, being asked for which user to run the program is odd, usually if the user only asked during installation if the user doesn't have the privillege of running the program.

I think something else may have gained control, or the permissions have screwed up somehow, doesn't seem you can change this either, unless you can find out what's affecting it.

Installation over the top might work, and get it back to a condition where you can control the computer. As long as you don't format, you'll keep your files, yet they'll be under the old user directories in which case all user login information will be gone, but their directories will still exist and you can recover everything including emails from outlook as far as I could tell when I performed an installation over the top.

All programs would have to be reinstalled again to get registry information back though.
