336183 2005-03-20 10:40:00 I have AMD 900 computer 256 mb ram w98se. About 2 yrs old bought from Henderson Computers.
It now (every 30 minutes or so) justs restarts itself, ie boots up runs scandisk.
Worked ok for 2 yrs with the normal amount of blue sreeens of death you would of expected. I have latest antivirus and spybot etc the problem is in the computer itself.
I dont know wether to get another motherboard and smack it in and try it
The amd mb I have is integrated what ever that means!
Thanks for any help.

336184 2005-03-20 10:45:00 well if its 2 years old and been blue screening over the 2 years then its proberly been faulty since you bought it.

does it restart when useing anything in particular?
any idea what the bluescreen message was ?

i suspect its more likly to be a power supply problem.

336185 2005-03-20 11:13:00 The blue screen has nothing to do with my problem It blue screened like all normal windows computer. It just goes monitor is shutting down (BLACK SCREEN) and it boots up after running scan disk

336186 2005-03-20 11:26:00 Hold on. Blue screens like all normal computers?! Not. Bluescreens especially often is a symptom.
I've never had one of mine blue screen. Last one I fixed that was doing it had a faulty ram module.

I'd say it was sick to begin with and now has even more probs. Yes, as above - check out the PSU and make a note of the errors given in the blue screens to see what that is.

336187 2005-03-20 11:27:00 Oh and integrated is probably referring to the graphics which means its onboard or built into the motherboard rather tahn a separate component. pctek (84)
336188 2005-03-20 16:18:00 Blue Screening isn't that common nowadays, but it's still around. Don't know why you would put up with it though?

I don't get "Monitor is shutting down", is that a message it says?

Some type of Power Save feature where ACPI or APM is playing up. Could be related to power supply and then the actual power supply source (want a pretty stable current, not spiking or dropping out etc).

Other than that, the shutdown seems to be forced because Windows is not allowing for the programs to shutdown cleanly which is why ScanDisk is called. Could be virus activity too.

336189 2005-03-20 22:57:00 It is not a virus, I repeat its not a virus there is something wrong with the hardware on the computer
I shouldnt have mentioned the blue screens of death, the computer was was running ok for 2 years ( normal amount of blue screens I repeat normal amount) Please forget I even mentioned blue screens.
Until about 3 weeks ago now it restarts itself and scandisk with ever increasing frequency. Sometimes it will restart when browsing other times it will restart with no key strokes at all .
Should I change the power supply first?
Thanks

336190 2005-03-20 23:13:00 A mate had a similar problem Ted and it turned to be the power supply, which was too small. (Rated at 230 watts from memory) He had added a CD writer and a couple of other bits and pieces and the poor power supply couldn't keep up.

As a matter of interest what is your power supply rating (watts) and what make?

(Some ratings are grossly exaggerated) :)

336191 2005-03-20 23:20:00 A couple of years age there were a lot of motherboards made using faulty capacitors. Look for electrolytic capacitors with bulging ends or stuff leaking out onto the MB especially round the CPU area. The capacitors look like small beer cans with a plastic wrapper. This fault can cause this type of problem.

Examples here http://www.badcaps.net/

336192 2005-03-21 19:17:00 I had this problem with my machine, basically since new.

I thought it was a problem with my USB modem as it allways seemed to happen when I was connected to the internet so I tried swapping the connection etc but it eventually turned out to be a faulty memory chip.

Luckily for me it had a lifetime warranty and was replaced free of charge
