335980 2005-03-20 00:23:00 I have put together a pc from leftovers from another one and for the life of me cant get it to work right.First off its a pcchips m920 mobo,p4 1.4 processor,768 megs of ram, seagate 20 gig hd,and I have 3 different video cards that Im trying.Ok heres the prob I know that everything did work so I was gonna reformat the harddrive(xp home) and it will boot up fine from cd then when it comes up to the press enter to install xp,r to repaie or f3 to exit when I press enter to install it immediately shuts down the whole pc.I have tried every config in the bios that I can also have switched video cards from 3 different ones but still to no avail.I have triple checked everything and cant find any probs.Yeah it also has a 300 watt power supply. Please help and thanks in advance. shatteredsoul (7655)
335981 2005-03-20 00:26:00 Hi and Welcome to PressF1 :)

Did you make sure your RAM type is compatible for the motherboard, and that the BIOS can support that much RAM?

335982 2005-03-20 00:34:00 is the cpu inserted properly, did you apply the thermal paste? is it overheating? in the bios is the shutdown temperature set too low?

check all of your plugs and screws to see if it they are inserted properly

format the HDD in another pc then put the HDD back in the pc in question and try again

335983 2005-03-20 00:36:00 yes the ram has been in the mobo since we first built it the only thing thins that are different are the case its all in,the power suplly the video card and the hard drive. The mobo dont have a temp shut off that I have seen in the bios. shatteredsoul (7655)
335984 2005-03-20 00:58:00 HAve you tried a boot disk, then try to format the HDD?

Does it always shut down at exactly that stage or just after a bit? HAve you tried another PSU?

Is everything detected OK in the BIOS? HDD, CD etc etc?

The CPU fan is working ok?

335985 2005-03-20 01:14:00 Umm has this mobo got a 4 pin ATX socket on it??

If it has, is the ATX power connector from the power supply connected to it??

It shouldnt need paste if its a P4, and the CPU/heatsink fan is a OK .

335986 2005-03-20 01:23:00 Hi

I had a similar problem and went to the extent of changing the motherboard and still had the same problem. Finally I found the problem was with my brand new Auriga 300W powersupply. THe damn thing was having such a low power output (amps) on the 12V line that the system was shutting down/reboot. The Powersupply even though rated 300W could only drive a P3 and GeForce2MX. My new machine had a P4 2GHz and a Geforce4 Ti and 2 harddisks demanding lot of 12V power.

Solution, look again at the Power supply individual voltage rating, especially the 12V amps. compare that to a working P4 power supply specs.

Cheers

335987 2005-03-22 02:50:00 yeah it does reboot at the exact same spot everytime right after trying to reformat the harddrive when you hit the enter button to install it reboots. It doesnt have a 4 pin atx connector. The bios is detecting everything right and the power supply is a new one(300 watts) but maybe its not enough. Thanks for your help. shatteredsoul (7655)
