335769 2005-03-19 08:40:00 It's offical. I hate that error message

I'm trying to get Windows XP Home on the old computer. It's a 233mhz, 96mb machine, so within the minimum specs (just!). Except it's giving me nothing but grief.

I've got 2 partitions on it. C: is a FAT32 with Windows 98SE (Works fine, 8gb) and D: is a FAT32 with the XP install, and it's 31gb. If I boot into XP, it gets to the floating green bars for around a second, then gives me a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error, or one saying that there may not be enough disk space. If I boot into safe mode, it loads /WINDOWS/system32/driver/mup.sys, then freezez loading the next one, which I believe is acapi.sys. Once or twice, it's given an acapi.sys error below the bog long technical info, so I'm blaming that.

As noted before, I have a working (!) 98se install, nd both partitions are FAT32, so I can modify the XP partition. So, does anybody know of a fix, or a link to a fix site?

Thanks, Edward :(

335770 2005-03-19 08:49:00 You need troubleshooting. In the BIOS, load Fail-Safe defaults, disable the onboard modem, sound, and LAN (where applicable). Take out all the cards, with the exception of video, and run the machine for a while. If the machine stays stable, then start adding/re-enabling the devices one by one.Do this one by one until you start crashing again. Whatever you put in last is the culprit.

Also the PC might meet min specs but it is way too old for XP in my opinion.
At the least you should update the BIOS and make sure you have up to date XP drivers for all the hardware in the machine.

Just because 98 is coping with it doesn't mean XP will.

Start with all that and see how it goes........

335771 2005-03-19 08:58:00 I've already tried removing the sound card (which happens to be ISA) and the network card, but that made no difference.

Anyway, I found a M$ support article, and will try it. tommorrow.

335772 2005-03-19 09:30:00 I wouldnt even TRY installing XP on a 233 mhz PC.

I would try uninstalling the video drivers, in safe mode. Then reboot in normal mode. Then reinstall the latest drivers for the videocard.

Its most probably a corrupt or faulty driver thats been installed.

335773 2005-03-19 13:55:00 My guess is that the error involves acpi.

Basically you probably need a bios update to enable acpi for the motherboard (I had this with some old Dells).

Or failing that:

During the installation startup, press F5 when the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" message appears. When you are prompted, specify the correct computer type and hardware abstraction layer (HAL). For example, if you have a single processor, specify the "Standard PC" HAL.

Hope you turn the eye candy off ;)

335774 2005-03-20 04:57:00 FYI, I get this on my PC. Not specific to an application though. After much investigation I *think* that it's overheating, as if I take the side off the case to increase the airflow, the pc will run without hitch. With the case on I get about 2-3hrs (less if playing games) before it crashes. ajaybee (7648)
335775 2005-03-20 16:48:00 You wouldn't happen to be running an NVIDIA card with VIA chipset?

This seems to be what I ruled this error down to when it started appearing, might require installing newest or a later version of VIA4IN1.

Could also be a problem with Virtual IRQs and the device assigned to one of them doesn't like it, in my case was my graphics card running on IRQ 16.
