335890 2005-03-21 21:25:00 Assuming Win98 is setup with the details:
IP = 192.168.0.3
subnet = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.0.2
DNS1 = 192.168.0.2
DNS2 = 192.168.0.1

I want you to try this on the Win98 box:
Click start
Run
command
Now, type:
ping 192.168.0.2
ping 192.168.0.1

Post back the results :)

335895 2005-03-23 07:27:00 The cable that came with your dsl modem is a patch cable not a crossover cable, you need to buy a crossover cable.

Some network cards are able to use either cable to make a direct connection between pc's (Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller for instance) this is most likely the reason you managed to connect to your friends pc using the patch cable.

335896 2005-03-24 21:17:00 ok, how do i know what cable to buy? DigitalMessiah (7649)
335897 2005-03-27 11:37:00 Any computer store should be able to help you, just make sure they understand you need a crossover cable to network two computers directly (network card to network card). Steven (7085)
