336058 2005-03-20 07:17:00 Hi PF1ers,
Some of you may know already how dumb I am, but for those of you who don't, Here goes.
I have been running an unsecured wireless network for several (6) months.
I thought in view of the fact that it is unsecured I should take some security precautions and I set out to secure it. I have done it so well that now I cannot connect to it with my laptop.
If there is someone who can direct me through changing my settings back I will be forever indebted to them.

336059 2005-03-20 07:32:00 yep if you 'reset' your router you should be ok and back to factory settings.........you may finda little hole on it and push a pen/pin or whatever in there to reset it........ drcspy (146)
336060 2005-03-20 08:13:00 Thanks drcspy, I deleted the connection in Network connections and then let the computer find it again and I am back on line. I am just glad that Mrs theother1 didn't clock on to it or I would have got a lecture about it. theother1 (3573)
336061 2005-03-20 08:55:00 MAC binding is about the most secure way of locking down your WLan. Im not sure how to do it in Doze, but set it not to accept connections from any other MAC addresses. Sniffing is still possible, but it means that they wont be able to use your internet connection :) Chilling_Silence (9)

Is there anyone else who can give me instructions to do this. I have searched windows help and there is no mention of it there.

336063 2005-03-20 09:56:00 Your wireless router manual should have instructions on how to do this. :) Jen (38)

MAC's can be spoofed, so a MAC ACL is just one prong in the fork of anti-warcracker justice. If you're using .g equipment, you'll find WPA+PSK/TKIP to be a very simple system to use in comparison to WEP, and it's better than WEP. One password/phrase and that's it. TKIP (Temporal Keys) will keep rotating your encryption, meaning the weakness will be with your password/phrase.

Disabling SSID broadcasting will help a little bit as well, it's not too effective but every little bit helps.

There are even more secure ways to lock down a WLAN, but having a RADIUS server for a couple of pc's, a laptop and/or a PDA is a *little* excessive ;) It's when your network gets to the enterprise or WMAN stage that you should be thinking of RADIUS

When changing security settings on a WLAN AP/Router, you'll need to re-setup your clients individually, I think that this may have been a case of the client laptop not being set up to access the new security settings?

But definately go the manuals
