2005-03-19 19:11:00 | sorry to bother everyone, but i am attempting to LAN with my Windows XP pro and my mother's Windows 98 SE, i have service pack one on both, and i am using a DSL Modem with a USB connector to the front of my tower, and an ethernet cord from the BACK of my tower to my mom's tower, now this method has worked on my friend's computer but most likely because he has windows xp pro as well... i was reading through some other posts but nothing has worked... i dont believe 98 se has a firewall on , i do NOT have a 98 SE disc due to the fact that my OLD school's computer lab installed this for me on a 1 GB hard drive... any help would be appreciated... questions if need be are welcomed too | DigitalMessiah (7649) | |
2005-03-19 19:41:00 | Welcome to PressF1, I presumed that both your mom's Windows 98SE and your XP Pro computer has ethernet card. Are you attempting to link up both computers with cross-over ethernet cable? Or is it going to go through a router or a switch? It's better to have a firewall for both of the computers, rather than not having one. If I am not mistaken, in Zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com) you can set the IP address that are allowed to communicate between the computers. Cheers! | Renmoo (66) | |
2005-03-19 21:40:00 | hey thanks for your help... i am currently on Verizon Online DSL... No firewalls on ATM , but i have.... from my modem i have the modem to usb connection cable going to the usb port on my tower... then in the BACK of my tower i have ethernet to ethernet connection... it worked on me and my friends computer... now i heard that NTFS and FAT32 dont like each other but that there was a way to work with it... i have no router... i think it would be considered Cross-over but im not 100% sure... | DigitalMessiah (7649) | |

You want to have both PCs acess the internet? To do it this way I think you'd have to use internet sharing but thats horrible. Why not just connect a hub and both connect to the router that way? |

2005-03-19 21:55:00 | To make sure it is a crossover cable, check if both computer has a ethernet cable running BETWEEN them. Can you see both computer on the workgroup? To check that out, right-click My Computer, then click Map network drive, then click browse. NTFS and FAT32 have nothing to do with networking, by the way. Are you also try to share the internet connection between the two computer? GOod luck! :) | Renmoo (66) | |
2005-03-19 23:13:00 | yes i have an ethernet cable running from the back of mine to the back of my mother's... while i have a usb cable from my modem to my usb port... and i AM trying to share the internet through a gateway...when i try to map network drive.. i do NOT see the other computer.. and the green ethernet light is NOT on... now i know the ethernet card is good on my mom's because i connect her to the modem and the light comes on.. EDIT: i can't afford a router T_T

2005-03-20 04:06:00 | Have you try setting both the device on the same workgroup? To do so, right click My Computer, click the Computer Name tab, then click Change... to give the workgroup a name. Make sure you set both the computer's workgroup the same name, otherwise they won't detect each other. To set ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) between the 2 computer, right-click your ISP connection, click properties and enable the Internet Connection Sharing feature. Never mind about the router, crossover ethernet cable will do the job. Cheers! :) | Renmoo (66) | |
2005-03-20 04:26:00 | Check the networking FAQ, and also check several threads Ive written in, in particular one to Poppa John. The computers dont need to be part of the same workgroup, thats only good if you want samba file-sharing browsing made simple. Its not crucial. On the Win98SE Gateway PC (The one connected to the net), you want to enable internet connection sharing and then go into the TCP/IP properties for your LAN adapter and set it like so: IP = 192.168.0.1 subnet = 255.255.255.0 Gateway = blank DNS = w.x.y.z Where w.x.y.z is your ISP's DNS Servers Otherwise, try: 202.27.184.3 Reboot. On your XP Client PC, set it up: IP = 192.168.0.2 subnet = 255.255.255.0 DNS = 192.168.0.1 DNS2 = 202.27.184.5 From there, click Start --> run --> cmd Now, type: ping 192.168.0.1 Post back the results Chill.

2005-03-20 05:02:00 | i read somewhere that BOTH ip's cannot be 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 or it messes up . . . now chilling silence . . you have it backwards . . i want my XP pro to be the internet provider and my Windows 98 SE to be the one that access it through me EDIT: Either way . . . i tried pinging both of those ip's i set up and they time out so i must be doing something wrong . . . . i can send a screen shot of what my side on the XP PC is looking like . . .
