336552 2005-03-21 18:52:00 Will someone tell me which is the best Raedon 9500, 9600,9700, 0r 9800?
Is there any difference between makers? That is,is a Gigabyte 9600 better than say, a GeCube or an Alberton.
Ditto for Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT.
Seems to me there are too many makes and models available.
I just want a card to play MS Flight Sim 2004. A ge force fx 5200 is just not up to the job.

The usual story is you decide how much you can afford and then spend more :-)

336554 2005-03-21 20:24:00 Yeah as stated before buy as much card as you can with your dosh. Out of the 1st bundle of cards you mention the 9800 is the best and if you are after an ATi card then I would suggest a 9800Pro. Whatever you do ... DO NOT BUY ANY CARD THAT SAYS "SE" AT THE END!!! It's a waste of money.

If you prefer the nVidia chipset then I'd go for the 6600GT.

As for which brand, well spoilt for choice really, but I would say that bundled software and accessories definitely is a factor.

Personally Gigabyte is a top notch brand (my old card was a Gigabyte 9600XT), but I would also recommend GeCube (my current card is a GeCube X800XT) and the bundled software was really good with both of them, especially my 9600XT, it came with no less than 3 games and PowerDVD 5.

Hope that helps

cheers

336555 2005-03-21 23:40:00 I've just bought a Raedon 9800 pro and am about to fit it.
See if I can do that without bending pins on CPU or writing off my m/b.

336556 2005-03-21 23:44:00 Before you do (bet your doing it already ) uninstall the nvidia drivers, run driver cleaner, shut down the comp, replace video card, power back on....Install driver.... Metla (12)
336557 2005-03-22 06:10:00 Well I've now got a raedon 9800 pro installed. It's certainly an improvement.
But I don't realy think it's a $400 improvement. But at least I'm happy for the moment.

336558 2005-03-22 06:19:00 Metla, you mentioned about driver cleaners in the previous post.
(now for the no0b question...) Where can I find one of these apps?

Its a far superior card to what you had so should be able to make the game run at a far faster framerate and at a much higher detail, Though you will be wanting to run at a high resolution to make the most of it,1024x768 is a good starting point, anything less looks like lego, if your monitor can handle 1600x1200......

The 9800pro range was/is also one of the best performers when it comes to AA and anistropic filtering, AA redraws the frame and overlays it to get rid of jaggies,an efect that kills many lessor cards but the 9800pro takes in its stride, there are many levels to choose from when it comes to AA,so pick the one which gives the best look without too much of a performance trade off.

anistropic filtering forces textures to keep their detail when viewed from a distance, again this has an effect on performance and display quality.A few levels to choose from.

I hope you followed my advice and cleaned the driver out properly before install as remenants of the nvidia driver will hamper performance.
