336508 2005-03-21 10:05:00 Hello everybody. :) Can anybody enlighten me with have a query on behalf of a friend. He had no firewall on his Toshiba laptop(WinXP), so I recomended he should install at the least a the free one (ZoneAlarm) to protect his PC. He did so and I explained to him about the learning phase it goes through as each apllication seeks internet access, but one came up that im not sure about. It was "Windows Explorer Server" (explorer.exe) was trying to access internet on port 1024. What is this and does it need internet access?

He is just your average pc user, reading emails and browsing the net. Dosent play any online games or much else really.
If anybody can shed some light on this it would be much apreciated.

P.S. Also, I recomended AVG, but had problems installing it. Went to Trend Micro website and did a online virus scan which turned up negative.

336510 2005-03-21 11:06:00 For me, I just allow that explorer.exe to connect to the internet. You might want to block it if you suspect that it is infected by viruses or whatsoever. Renmoo (66)

336512 2005-03-21 12:10:00 On my system, when I am using Explorer to, yes, "explore" the system trying to find lost files or whatever, sometimes it seems to want to go onto the net and ZoneAlarm Popup appears, sometimes if I am in a good mood I allow it other times I don't. I never tick the box that gives permanent access. However nothing good or bad ever happens whether I refuse permission for access to the net or not. I don't think it makes any difference.

I seem to remember long ago that MS said they were trying to make their systems transparent, in other words one would not be able to tell whether the data was coming from the hard drive or from the net, maybe this is a hang over from this dangerous design objective.

336513 2005-03-21 19:25:00 Thank you for your advice everyone. Ill try and install the Avast anti virus program, then if nothing comes up, give "Windows Server" permenet access.
