336490 2005-03-21 09:35:00 My daughter has and older computer, running windows 98. When she boots up she gets a message saying operator not found. What can she do to fix it please Sand (7332)
336491 2005-03-21 09:39:00 Does the message actually say "Operating System not found"?

Check to make sure there are no floppy disks that have been left in the drive.

336492 2005-03-21 09:41:00 So I take it, it says this once she's in Windows 98??

Can she still use 98 tho??

It sounds like this is in the startup somewhere. Umm, look in startup in program files... Whats there?? Anything with operator in it??

Is that all it says? Operator not found?? Does it say/show a folder as well??

336493 2005-03-21 09:48:00 says operating system not found. No discs left in . can't get a start menu just blck screen with the message. Sand (7332)
336494 2005-03-21 09:52:00 You need to get into the BIOS and see if your hard drive is still detected. When it first boots, just start tapping the DEL key until the blue BIOS/CMOS screen shows. Using the arrows navigate around until you see the hard drives listed (check under Standard CMOS setup), but your menu may be different. Jen (38)
336495 2005-03-21 10:01:00 no nothing happened it says system bios shadowed as well as operating system not found. Sand (7332)

336497 2005-03-21 13:50:00 Sounds to me like a corrupt partition table.

Honestly, easiest thing is to format the box, unless you're up to doing some rescuing off a Live LinuxCD :)

Chill.

336498 2005-03-21 13:52:00 Would really need to see if you can get into the BIOS for the information, to check whether the hard drive is actually picked up, could be a dead drive, incorrect configurations, not set to boot... etc

336499 2005-03-21 21:13:00 Think I'm out of my depth here. It's a Phillips pentium 2. We bought it secondhand 3 or 4 years ago and passed it on to our daughter this year. I guess like most of us older beings it's getting tired and wants a rest. will send some info to her and see how she gets on. Thanks for your help it's nice to know theres someone out there who knows what they're doing and that we can tap into that. Sand (7332)
