336660 2005-03-22 12:05:00 i'm not great with XP networking but i've found useing the guest acc dosn't really work well.

you need to make an account on the XP pc the same username and password that you use to log onto the network with on the win98 pc. you MUST log onto the network on the 98 pc, tho you can use tweakUI to enable auto log on.

336661 2005-03-22 12:31:00 Im with Tweak'e, to be honest the Guest Account has _never_ worked here in a networking situation.... Chilling_Silence (9)
336662 2005-03-23 04:22:00 Of course I have the great advantage that I don't use XP. :D

There seem to be a few problems. It is a wireless network? That can bring its own "challenges", but it does seem to be working well enough. The XP machine can be "seen", and you get an error message when you try to connect. It's encouraging to have something working well enough to give error messages. ;)

The error message refers to insufficient privileges. That is a strong hint that there is no user account for the W98 on the XP. No user account, no connection. I believe that MS say that the Guest account is good enough; I will believe those who have found it isn't. (I did say "the Guest account might work"). :nerd: The "Guest" account does have security implications, (and might be crippled with SP2?).

I prefer to work with real OSs, so this is only my rough idea of what you have to do. MS people will know the real nuts and bolts, and will jump in if I provoke them enough. :p

On the W98 machine, in the Control Panel/network page enable "Login to Microsoft Network". (Something like that). That will want you to enter a user name and password (probably after a reboot). Remember the name and password. Then as Administrator on the XP machine, create a user with exactly the same name and password. (InClUdInG CaSe !).

It might work after that. :D

336663 2005-03-23 06:48:00 Looks pretty good to me Graham. But then, I don't use XP either, just win2k and Linux, something tells me I'll never use XP. Murray P (44)
336664 2005-03-23 09:04:00 Graham,
the Win XP Machine can see the Win 98 machine not the other way round.
Anyway I went to that other thread and picked out this bit from Chills advice and I will give this a go, I thought I could get away without any passwords, but not so it seems.

<Make life easy:
Make a new user account on all PC's, call it: Admin
Give the account the same password on all PC's (Yes, it MUST have a password), and then logon to one (Any one) of these PC's with that account.>
Thanks Chill.

Thanks wise ones.
