336631 2005-03-22 06:20:00 Incompatability issues should have been more of an issue for the earlier drives on the market (though my lite-on loves every item of media thrown at it,never had a coaster yet), a recently purchased drive should be able to eat anything and everything, though by rights you should have got a 16x speed drive in a brand new computer.

I guess when you purchase rebranded gear from DSE you just lay your money down and take your chances?

Bah.

Sounds like the crappest plan ever to me.

336632 2005-03-22 22:07:00 Ok - I got it to burn!! I used Imation 4x DVD+R instead of the DSE 8x and it worked (I wasn't going to spend more on an 8x disc yet just in case).

But, it is still really slow. I ran a speed test and it says that it is reading at 1x. What causes this and how do I get it to go faster? It's taking about 50 minutes to burn a DVD. Surely this can't be right?!

Anyone know how I can speed things up (short of buying anew computer)?

Thanks

336633 2005-03-22 22:43:00 You need to give more info, what are you reading at 1x, what exactly takes 50 minutes?
The DSE site gives some details about the drives, eg for 1 package it says that it is a Pioneer drive. Read the reviews of Pioneer 8x on CDRLabs or CDFreaks and see how their times compare.

336634 2005-03-22 22:44:00 Alistar, I had problems with Nero, burning DVDs, and a friend of mine had the same problems - error messages, failed burning, etc. But we solved this by updating Nero - go to their web site to download the updates, but be prepared for a long download - the updates we did were over 60 Mb (used broadband at work).

BTW, the updates increased the speed of burning significantly.

336635 2005-03-22 23:06:00 Update Nero, disable services running on your PC, AV etc and see if it improves reliability.

What speed CPU? How much RAM?

Have you tried just one brand of disc?

336636 2005-03-22 23:14:00 Another thing to check is to make sure that XP hasn't reset Current Transfer Mode to PIO only. Go to device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and right click on primary IDE channel. Click on Advanced settings.

I had to change mine a while ago through regedit. Do a search on Changing PIO to DMA, as usual beware about playing with registry but from memory the change was simple and I have not had to do it again.

I found a lot of useful info from this (http://www.afterdawn.com) site.

CPU is an Athlon 64 3000+ with 256mb of RAM.

I have tried DSE brand 8x DVD-R and Imation 4x DVD+R (It is a dual Pioneer 8x DVDRW drive). The DSE brand failed everytime. The Imation work but are slow. I have disabled everything possible on the computer (everything except 'critical services').

I have also changed from PIO to DMA. Nero Disc Speed displays 6x as my maximum when I put in a DVD movie, but 1x when I put in a blank DVD - I guess this is to do with the Imation DVDs? Or is it a Nero fault? I will try tonight with another burning program and see if there is a difference, before updating Nero and seeing if that is the problem.

336638 2005-03-23 21:57:00 I tried burning with another program and have the same problem - it burns at an average of 1.1x and takes about 50 minutes to complete. Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

336639 2005-03-23 22:10:00 Any chance you can try another type of disc, such as something cheap, CMC, Princo, or (if you must) Laser?! Chilling_Silence (9)
336640 2005-03-23 22:37:00 Is the DVD drive still using a DMA mode or has it reverted to PIO again? PaulD (232)
