336562 2005-03-22 06:56:00 Well,Jack,is it worthwhile going to FS 2004? I've got 2002 and a new pc with an NVIDIA GeForce PCX 5750 in it,so at last 2002 runs better. But the boy's coming up for the weekend,so wondered if it's worth the step up! Watching your posts with interest,by the way!! Neil McC (178)

I can't realy advise you on this as I've never seen 2002.

336564 2005-03-22 17:58:00 I can see I'm going to have to be a bit more careful.
I was adjusting the settings and my monitor switched off. Got a message about being outside range and off it went.
Had to start in "safe" and went back to first start with new card. Guess I'd better download the User Manual and have a read.

Got a message about being outside range and off it went. You would of chosen a resolution or refresh rate that was unable to be supported by your monitor for this to happen. Your monitor manual will have the supported specifications. Also, there is an option in Display properties > Settings > Advanced Settings to only list the rates which can be supported by the monitor (for refresh rate).

336566 2005-03-22 23:31:00 I was looking at getting a new Graphics card as well.

My MB only supports 4xAGP, so thought a high end X800 XT or 6800 U would be overkill. ATi will be releasing new cards in the next few months probably PCX , so I suspect these will old AGP will fall.

So I am thinking should I get the best AGP card anyway, which will tie me over for another 1-2 years, before I need to do a new MB/RAM/HDD/Video upgrade.

I don't want to spend more than $500.

I note that my existing Card GF4-Ti4200 is still around $200

336567 2005-03-22 23:38:00 ATI have already released PCI_E cards,...and the the price of the PCI_E cards are cheaper then the AGP equilivents.

Plus, high end cards are bought into the country in small numbers, they run out of stock well before the price drops.....

I would suggest you purchase a 6600gt now, then in 2 years time replace the entire setup.

336568 2005-03-22 23:41:00 hmmm ... I have thought about that model, but I want 256 MB so that I can get all the features enabled in RTW. I cant find a 66oo GT 256MB KiwiTT_NZ (233)
336569 2005-03-22 23:51:00 Whats RTW?

Anyhow, the about of onboard ram has little to nothing to do with performance,Its the Memory controller and speed of ram that make the difference.

The 9800pro/9800xt for example get their strong performance from the 256bit memory controller, enabling them to stil perform with AA and anistopic filtering enabled.

The 6600gt only has a 128 bit memory contoller, but due to the fast DDR III is able to out perform the 9800xt in many functions.

This is all indepentant of the amount of ram onboard and does of course relie on having a powerful video chipset on the card.

336571 2005-03-22 23:57:00 RTW = Rome:Total War the sequel to Medieval: Total War.

I will need a lot of "Sprites" (old term) active, when you have over 10,000 men on screen each individually rendered and their actions are uniquely defined. This level of data would require a decent amount of RAM on the card. I would have thought.

Excellent article on RTW performance. Didn't realise it was limited to 1280x960. You may be aware I am getting a 19" LCD who's native res is 1280x1024.

I may give this card due consideration then; $300 street price is a good compromise. Until I do the complete rebuild in a couple of years.
