1382405 2014-09-03 02:17:00 Microsoft delivers ongoing updates now rather than Service Packs

They should still be doing service packs, maybe once a year, so that when you do have to do a fresh install of Windows you don't have to download and installed 200 odd updates!

1382407 2014-09-03 06:12:00 Your average Joe at home is hardly likely to know how to do that gary67 (56)

As gary67 said, that is not the easiest thing to do.
I've done it many times and often get issues with the created image not installing correctly and not all updates can be slipstreamed anyway.

1382409 2014-09-03 11:02:00 Yea, those lengthy updates are a REAL bugger. A new win 8 laptop I had here went through about 8GB of my data allowance last month. linw (53)

is there a difference between installing 1mb x 200 updates vs a 200mb x1 update?

do you know why? the Windows 8.1 update download to Windows 8 is less than 4GB

Also in terms of lengthy updates being a real bugger, would you prefer that your PC isn't getting updates or?

There is when you work in a computer business and one of things we check is that the operating system is up to date.
More often than not the machine will need to install a 100 or more updates and this takes a long time.
Installing a service pack doesn't take as long.

1382413 2014-09-04 00:32:00 I use Autopatcher for any re-installs I have to do. Works pretty well, apart from the never ending Net.framework updates. Installs most updates apart from those. Usually only a couple of hundred MB's.

But having to install the 8.1 update is a real pain. Wouldn't want to do too many of those a month.

Why not just get an 8.1 disc or ISO?
