domain_name: spark.co.nz
query_status: 200 Active
domain_dateregistered: 2002-03-28T12:41:01+12:00
registrant_contact_name: Telecom IP Limited
ns_name_01: ish4.telecom.co.nz
ns_name_02: ish5.telecom.co.nz

Well up until Feb 2005 Sparc were using the spark.co.nz domain to mirror their sparc.co.nz site.
looks like Telecom began the spark gathering then lol

Yep - Sparc www.Sparc.co.nz - Sparc was until the last few years "Sport & Recreation NZ" - the Govt. funding agency for :(high level NZ Sport.
Now renamed to "Sport NZ". Only took Telecom a few short years to grab the redundant name.

1368202 2014-02-21 17:44:00 . . .
Spark makes me think of an electricial company .
Outside of i/c engines, a spark is frequently a precursor system failure . However, it is a good fit with their assterisk logo . ;)

1368204 2014-02-21 19:20:00 So they want to be an internet content provider like Netflix!

The thing is Netflix is a cool name and says what it does.

Spark is a childish name and invites derision every time you say it.

I don't think that big old monolithic giants like Telecom have the nouse to pull this off, and $20 million does not seem a lot of content.

1368205 2014-02-21 19:40:00 Actually could be the other way around, Sky have told Telecom to get lost ( in so many words) www.nzherald.co.nz was thinking more along the lines of potential competition. Telecom was only providing a pass through billing service for Sky, and I daresay weren't getting much of a ticket clip for it... As far as Telecom is concerned, the end of the Sky arrangement is probably a welcome blessing. johcar (6283)
1368206 2014-02-21 19:46:00 Who?

The test and measurement division of HP, then spun off to Agilent and now changed again to KeySight. They do oscilloscopes etc. Nothing much to do with PCs actually. But in terms of the name, 'Spark' is about as stupid as 'KeySight', in my opinion.

Test equipment was what HP started out doing, this was their first commercial product.

As for Telecom moving to a new brand.
It is a massive gamble.

I find it hard to fathom why they thought a name like spark
would reflect the nature of the business, damp squib more like :p
