Don't they go hand in hand?

Not specifically. Sometimes you can be rich but living in poverty. Bad choices on an ongoing basis with spending are the primary cause.

1367428 2014-02-14 19:05:00 Yes but a big proportion of the poverty is self-inflicted.

A friend is an electrician for a company that does electrical maintenance on local State Housing.

He tells sickening stories of families living in what most of us would call poverty but there is a 43” TV on the wall, and half a dozen or so are sitting around playing with X-Boxes, or talking on their iPhone whilst watching Sky TV.

My friend’s there to replace the stove which has never been cleaned and has somehow had the glass front to the oven door broken.

A lot of these places would tick most of the boxes for living in poverty, or squalor, but when you look closer the money derived from benefits has simply been squandered on unnecessary luxuries.

I fear that draconian measures will be needed to address the problem.

1367429 2014-02-14 21:28:00 poverty can be self inflicted but there is also the poverty trap.
its often about not knowing any better, not seeing a future and having no hope.
if everyone around them is the same, they think its normal and if they start to climb out of it everyone around them drags them back down into it. hence the trap.

the big tv and sky is a symptom of not having any hope or knowing any better.

even myself. looking at buying a house at the mo. if i look at all the toys i've spent $$$ on, there's half a house deposit.
but when your earning so little that a house is a dream that will never happen, you don't bother trying to save for one.
if its doesn't look like you have a future you don't bother trying to make one.

1367430 2014-02-14 21:42:00 On the other hand there are plenty of millionaires and business leaders that grew up in State Houses, our present Prime Minister being one.

I guess it gets down to the character of the individual.

1367431 2014-02-14 22:31:00 ^^ Well said B.M / tweak'e on both those last posts. I agree :)

The question is, as metioned, are draconian measures required to pull people out of it? Or are they happier with "the status quo"?

The problems is that only a few at the top seem to be getting their hands on the millions.
Think of it like Justin Bieber is white, and getting millions, why isn't he giving any of it to you?

What makes you think he should? I have no time for his music or much else about the guy in fact I think he is a spoiled overpaid idiot. Never the less he and the vast majority of other super rich people create wealth and employment for many many others who work for them either directly or the businesses that support what ever it is they do.

The exceptions to that are those that make their money by conning others out of theirs.
