He pushes a button on his iPhone and someone from out the back brings whatever it is you're buying out the front to you. If you are paying with a card of any sort you can pay for it on the spot via a card reader attached to the back of the phone or if you pay in cash they guy goes out the back of the shop to put it in the till when you leave. It's a pretty cool consumer experience really. If that's actually broken down to what it really is in the way it functions and for what purpose, its only like the takeaway shops or the restaurant orders. Its basically only a menu, locate what ever the person wants to purchase, and press the button to order.

Design a website on an iPad or tablet.. Nope

So really theres a need to define "Real Work".

While the touch devices work very well for what they do - Example is the menu, pre set items from a list, doing things like full web design, programming, running things like graphic editing or design software that have many options in their functions, just to name a few, the desktop computer, or laptop will still win in the usability options.

Every device used for what's its good at doing. :)

Well you can definitely do photo editing on an iPad, there's a number of apps that do that . I' not aware of any code editing apps for iPad but for everything else it would just be a mater of someone writing an app for that task . iPads and android tablets don't lack for horse power or battery life .

1367521 2014-02-14 01:22:00 I'd like to know what forum members consider to be "real work" ?
Anything that accomplishes something useful and is necessary or desirable for day to day life.

1367522 2014-02-14 02:03:00 Well if they take away these not real jobs, customers can order themselves like Japan, ordering thru a kiosk machine in front and hand the receipt to the chef inside. And .. are chefs real jobs ...? Or like some places just order thru a hole in the wall and eat outside on the pathment :p An american I know that now works in Oz ... went to Asia and had a great $4.50AU equiv curry like that  together with the naan and a selection of sauces with the main curry. 1367523 2014-02-14 02:15:00 Wainui's examples are an extreme I think. Even typing a simple letter or a long e-mail is much easier on a proper PC or laptop and not something I'd want to do on a frequent basis for a job on a touch device. They are fine for what they are designed for and yes some Jobs have tasks that are well suited to a small touchscreen device and in that sense that can be used for "real" work but for any kind of computer based productivity task they are a distant second choice after anything with a keyboard and large screen. dugimodo (138)

Question - how many programs are there world wide ? ( impossible to answer) Are the companies or writers going to write apps for every single program so it can then run on a tablet, either iPad or Android ? I think we all know the real answer to that.

Like to see a tablet do the following: Open 3 spreadsheets, and display side by side, have 6 word documents open, as well as email, and music playing all at the same time, while working on MYOB. :D

One of my customers regularly has things like that on her desktop :waughh:

1367526 2014-02-14 03:09:00 Probably using something like POSiOS (http://www.posios.com/).
No need to get a custom built app usually as someone has already done the hard work for you. :D

Mind you some have no sense of humor ;) Point Of Sale :p

One of the restaurant's we went to early last year were using something similar, think they were possibly iPad minis, they were defiantly smaller than 10"

1367528 2014-02-14 03:37:00 I always think "Piece of Sh1t" whenever I see POS anywhere. :D

That's just one option anyway, there are lot of them. Vend is another popular one but aimed more at retail shops rather than restaurants.
