1367141 2014-02-08 19:20:00 A LG GU285 sounds about right for the job, and a good price. .

Seems to be a Vodafone/2Degrees only phone, not Telecom, so you may want to check that first - what he is on now.

1367142 2014-02-08 20:37:00 Vodafone I think. I'm seeing him later today. I'll check it all out then. Tony (4941)
1367143 2014-02-08 21:22:00 How about just a simple alarm clock with a very loud, nasty ring! Bryan (147)
1367144 2014-02-08 21:40:00 Because it is another device to carry around/remember to set/remember to (insert action here). Tony (4941)

That'd do the trick without over-complicating the issue. I remember getting a fax machine for an elderly Waiheke person who was deaf, having had all his friends talk him into it. Worked out OK until the friends and carers tired of trying to get him to use it, and then went back to snail mail. Fortunately the machine was a true bargain and ultimately no loss - I bid $1.00 on TradeMe and won the auction with no reserve (the machine still had the orginal film it).

What I'm saying to Tony is make sure the solution is what the user wants / needs and is within his capabilties.

However he does have a phone that may or may not do the job already. If it doesn't, we'll find something simple that does. The LG GU285 seems like a good one to look at. He is used to a phone, and the alarm clock or the medicine dispenser is just something else for him to remember to carry. He is forever losing stuff as it is, so the less baggage the better. I'm hoping to get him a phone case that will clip to his belt, so he just puts it on in the morning and takes it off at night. Tony (4941)

Sound like he needs a little home help from a carer and not a new cell phone. Is GP should get in touch with the local DHB for some funding for one.

He and his wife (93) have people come in morning and evening nearly every day, It's the times in between we have to worry about. :) Tony (4941)
1367149 2014-02-16 02:54:00 After properly checking out his current phone (Samsung E1310B) I found that all the functions we need are actually there, albeit in fairly primitive form. All We have to do now is to make sure he (a) keeps it charged (b) remembers to turn it on (c) remembers to keep it with him and (d) remembers how to use it.

Thanks everyone for the good advice.

To me it sounds like the alarm clock would be simpler.
