1367103 2014-02-08 21:56:00 Totally agree.
Most teachers are idiots when it comes to this sort of thing.......they're so caught up in the hype of OMG an Ipad, they can't get past that.

When my son was in Intermediate they started to have computers in schools - although only as "Computing Class". He knew more than the teacher, the teacher had zero idea how to operate it.

Ditto a friend of mine at the time, he was into computers, he was a metalwork teacher, and as he was the only one with any idea, he was made IT person for the school then. Even he thought that was a joke...

It's a tool, treat it as a tool, rather than the Answer To Everything. The net can be useful but it's like a rubbish tip, you have to wade through immense piles of crap to find the useful item.
Most of it is rubbish.

Even Wiki - you can't always trust what has been written......blindly accepting what you find on the net, well....

And Ipad? If they want, but no way should a brand be a requirement.

iPad brand recognition is like MacDonalds, every kid over 6 months old knows what one is and wants one. That makes it easier for schools to give 6-7-8 year olds iPads and have them know how to use them. If you don't have to train kids how to use a device then half your education battle is won.

Anyway what schools want is something that is standardised. Unfortunately for the apple haters it is the ipad, no matter what model you get. Schools could ask for android but I think their would need to narrow it down to 2 or 3 models. Otherwise you would have kids turning up with kindleHDs that cant access the playstore, or some cheap Chinese device that is so underpowered. Devices running all sorts of variations of android is going to be a hassle when something doesn't work.
I presume schools will be getting help from apple as far as infrastructure on the back end is concerned. So far I haven't heard of any other suppliers putting there hands up for an alternative.........

1367107 2014-02-08 22:22:00 Of course Plod :) Everyone knows that parents have a secret stash of cash to replace things at a moments notice.

If I can just remember where I hid mine things would be sweet Hmmmmm ;)

If I can just remember where I hid mine things would be sweet Hmmmmm ;)There is a school up north that was in the paper a couple of weeks ago that supplied students with ipads made possible through fundraising. At the moment devices remain at school, would you also be against this?
I just spent $100 on class fees for sons photography class this year, he came home with a rubber, glue stick, 3 pencils and a A3 pad. All of which I could have got from work for no more then $5. Considering he has to supply his own camera where does the other $95 go to and for what. So spending $400 on a device is a drop in the bucket considering, Im by no means flush with cash but parents that can afford to will, parents that cant will get help from the school. I'm pretty sure the reasoning behind the anti comments is not about devices in school but rather ipads. Maybe we could punish the children and give them a surface instead.. As I said in previous post unless another company comes up with a viable alternative for a device, the ipad is always going to be in front.

1367109 2014-02-08 22:54:00 All devices are alternatives.

Unless your capacity to think starts and finishes with what the market manipulators have brainwashed you with.

They are familiar with whatever they are exposed to, Its not their fault that adults get sucked in by the same marketing dribble that makes macshitburgers trillions of dollars a year.

My oldest son was 7 or 8 when he asked for an ipad, Oh how I laughed, and told him his friends parents are idiots.

Better he understands now so he can treat the sheep with the contempt they deserve.
