"Having done a first-aid course, Mr Avatea asked the driver if he was diabetic. "He said yes and then I looked in his bag, found that he had a banana and gave it to him because I wanted to get some sugars going. We gave him a muesli bar as well ... and found he had insulin."

Mr Avatea did not have to inject the man because a paramedic arrived."

So was that the reporters idiocy or the first aiders?
The reporter I'd say.

An insulin dependent diabetic in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) receiving more insulin would be dead in no time, if not just brain dead.

It has similar affects to a lack of oxygen on the brain.

Insulin is injected and then you have to keep up with it - that is, eat enough for the amount you injected.
If you don't, you get LOW sugar levels.

Eat too much or have not enough insulin, then you get HIGH, which is what you read about in the news all the time. Low term high leading to kidney failure and so on....

Low kills you. OR causes brain damage.

Husband had Type 1 from age 21 and was always told he couldn't have anything other than a class 1 license because of that.
Since when is it allowed? I bet it's not, I bet the guy had the license then got diabetes, probably type 2 which progressed to needing insulin. The company probably didn't understand the possible consequences.

You don't get covered by insurance either if you crash while hypo - it's classed as under the affects of medication.

1)If the Tuckie was still doing 50km or 100km, I can imagine the carnage.
2)Stupid reporters mentioning injecting hypo people could lead to some helpful person killing one.
