1367093 2014-02-08 01:16:00 I have two questions with all the hype in the media about back to school and ipads etc.

1 Are they really a learning tool ? What do they actually do on them ?

2 Why do they always mention Ipads and not Android or Tablets ? Is this another con job by Apple? (like Apples in schools in the 1980's)

And thats ipad only.

Imo its a crock of ****.

Yes, technology does need to be taught, yes our society is advancing past the point where data is recorded and distributed on dead trees, But it is not, and never should be about apple.

When used correctly they definitely serve as a learning tool.

I would say that a lot of the press (good and bad) is because they are iPads.

It's definitely not a con job. I would say that the schools would have considered all tablet options available and the majority seem to have decided on iPads for various reasons.

I know that in the past Microsoft has been a huge provider of software for students and schools at massively discounted prices although because they don't have the same availability of tablets and educational apps as the iPad does (for now) I would say that the iPad would be a better fit over all.

Well my old high school is going with Chromebooks...

That said, they've always been behind in technology. They were using Windows 2000 when I started in 2006

I would give my full support to a bring-your-own-device class, and if the teacher can't handle that concept then they need to be moved back to teaching pre-school.

What needs to be taught is the skill of using connected devices to find, authenticate and present data, to enhance their ability to learn using modern tools, Not to teach kids about the apple eco-system.

Makes me a little sick.

You need to step back another 2 decades at least.

Amstrads and C64 when I first came across them in school, though they were rolled over by Apple Macs.

Thank god for the Amiga 500.

Totally agree.
Most teachers are idiots when it comes to this sort of thing.......they're so caught up in the hype of OMG an Ipad, they can't get past that.

When my son was in Intermediate they started to have computers in schools - although only as "Computing Class". He knew more than the teacher, the teacher had zero idea how to operate it.

Ditto a friend of mine at the time, he was into computers, he was a metalwork teacher, and as he was the only one with any idea, he was made IT person for the school then. Even he thought that was a joke...

It's a tool, treat it as a tool, rather than the Answer To Everything. The net can be useful but it's like a rubbish tip, you have to wade through immense piles of crap to find the useful item.
Most of it is rubbish.

Even Wiki - you can't always trust what has been written......blindly accepting what you find on the net, well....

And Ipad? If they want, but no way should a brand be a requirement.
