| 337243 | 2005-03-23 14:44:00 | i am trying to install a new 8.4gb quantum fireball cr hard drive in an old hp vectra vl 5/100 series4 . It had a 1.2 gb. The machine should handle the 8.4. Anyway, the new hard drive came formatted. I have put the new drive in and connected cables. I try to startup, with startup disk(floppy) in and all i get is a black screen with blinking cursor in left corner. Can't do anything. I can access bios, ect, using F2 when turning on pc. Everything looks fine. I would try fdisk or try to partition if i could get a prompt. Trying to install win98. What should i do? | jonlinsmith (7340) | ||
| 337244 | 2005-03-23 17:12:00 | assuming its the only hard drive on that ide cable make sure it's jumpered to 'master' and the bios is set to 'auto'........if that dont work jumper it to 'cs' (cable select) | drcspy (146) | ||

| 337246 | 2005-03-24 00:35:00 | tried changing jumpers and it didn't help any. Paul D- i think your right. But i dont know how to change the boot order. I can get to system setup holding F2, but it doesnt let me change anything. Anyone know how? |

Just what drives are.( i am acting as the go-between for hubby trying to get the HP up and runnung)We are putting in a quantum firebal 8.4 gb. I went to Maxtor site and downloaded maxblast. That seems to install and it then tells him to reboot the pc and install windows. He only gets a black screen white a cursor blinking left top corner. Cannot enter anything. If it is not booting from the floppy disk it sounds like either a bad disk or floppy drive. Does the floppy drive activate when you start the computer and then stop with the flashing curser? |
