| 336756 | 2005-03-22 07:31:00 | hi, my computer has four users (of which only one is active - mine.) a few minutes ago, the logon screen disappeared, and xp now remains stuck at a screen displaying a "microsoft windows xp" icon and flag. the same happens on trying to boot in safe mode. btw, i'm on xp-pro+sp1. during the uninstallation of a software called zoot 4.0, i got a message about one registry key that could not be removed. the uninstallation ended, but system folders on my desktop (my computer, my network places, my documents etc etc.) suddenly lost their names, and were rendered by windows as simply "folder" ... clicking on them produced no response. i tried running one or two other programs e..g ashampoo uninstaller, but they could not be executed. ctrl-alt-del allowed seeing the currently running tasks/programs, and there was nothing amiss. also, it wasnt possible to shutdown... asking for a shutdown or a restart would produce no response. on resetting the computer, some lost files (which i later saw to be firefox's preferences file and trillian's contact list) were dumped into found.000's on different drives. however, the computer now does not display the logon screen - either in a normal or a safe mode boot. no logon=no usage. i've emailed zoot's tech support (in case they've heard of this problem before)... but hearing from them might take until tomorrow. hoping someone knows a solution... testsubjectalpha |
