337129 2005-03-23 15:47:00 Im another dissatisfied Paradise client. I find lately that I regularly get tipped off. Im connected but when checking status nothing is coming in or going out and the computer icon is blank.
I have to log off and re-enter connection to restart. This happens approx every ten minutes.
Im sure they are trying to bump we dial up users onto broadband, which I wont do until they can guarantee supply of service.
Neither do I ever want to be 'always on'. Doesnt this just provide open access 24/7 for malware?

Had an issue with my sisters new PC and it would connect only sometimes. Changed modems to external and all if fine now.

Me I use ADSL and it is 99.9% reliable. Only trouble is when the sites I try to go to are down.

ADSL is just the same as normal dial up. You can leave it connected 100% 24/7 if you want or you can turn it off after you have finished. Entirely up to the user.

I have jetstream - my jetstream is provided by Telecom, my ISP is Paradise. (I don't have Paradises jetstream). I have no trouble at all, the only 2 times I lost my connection were when Telecom was doing work on their equipment and once when Paradise shut off the authentication server for something.

Always on is not a problem but you MUST have a firewall. You should anyway, but its first line of defence for spyware etc.

I never have problems with spyware and viruses. (Yes, I do check anyway).

337132 2005-03-23 22:06:00 Hullo Finn, once connected to Paradise does your connection often cut out - though it appears to still be connected?
Oldferix, what type of modem do you use? what is the reported speed when you connect? Sometimes dialup modems connect at a higher speed than they can sustain and the connection can drop if the modem has to retrain. You may have to try limiting the maximum connect speed.

I had similar problems with xtra while my modem was trying to connect at 52K. It never stayed that high for long. It is now limited to 48K and stays at that rate for the entire session.

337133 2005-03-23 23:23:00 Just a thought here, maybe Ninja will know, but as ADSL take up increases, and dialup reduces, there may be less incentive for ISPs to maintain as many banks of modems, or to check they are working properly :illogical ????

And then there is the problem mentioned by Metla of the el cheapo $8 win-modems.

337135 2005-03-24 04:21:00 To PaulD, - My modem is: PCI SoftV92. The reported speed is usually 53kbs. I think that you have 'hit the nail on the head' so I have reduced the speed to 48kbs. Hopefully this will help - will keep you informed. Many thanks for your advice. Oldferix (5581)
337136 2005-03-24 08:52:00 Oldferix - sorry for the delay in replying. I have just logged on. What you and LucyL describe is what happens to me. It seems to be a fairly common problem for ordinary dial-up customers. Some helpful feedback has been shared. Finn (2140)
