337006 2005-03-23 07:17:00 A dirty install is... when you fit all the new hardware and run the PC without doing a fresh or clean install of Windows... otherwise known as PLUG 'N' PRAY. That is plug everything in... switch the PC on and then pray that it works!!!

Windows XP, NT and 2000 generally don't work with a dirty install as you would usually end up with a FATAL EXCEPTION ERROR as there is new hardware installed that drivers are not loaded for.

cheers

A dirty install is as described earlier, and is garenteed to work.

337010 2005-03-24 08:47:00 the problem with "dirty reinstall" is it dosn't remove the drivers, it simply uses different ones. while it does work ok it can (exspecially 9x) cause problems later on.

a simply and quick way is to install 2nd drive, boot straight into safe mode and copy any data to the 2nd drive. you can then partition, format and reinstall.
