2005-04-04 09:42:00 | Greetings to Murray & pctec However I am not very adventurous when it comes to getting involved in the inner workings of the system. On the principle "If it aint broke don't fix it" You MUST have spyware checkers too. AD-aware and Spybot are two of the good ones. Free downloads off the net. Just make sure you get Ad-Aware NOT adware. Don't do it if you don't know what you are doing. I should have taken my own advice!! I tried a Google Search and ended up at this site www.noadware.net I down loaded the offer which subsequently scanned my system and came up with Don't let people invade your privacy and slow down your PC! Try NoAdware for FREE and see for yourself if your PC is infected! I down loaded the Free offer the programe scanned my systems and came up with the following:- ITEMS FOUND:- W32/Noala.b@lvHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\RegValue (Danger Severe) Memory 0,Registry1, Cookies52, Files0, After asking the program to scan my system, believing that this was a Free trial I was asked to Register this sent me to another screen wanting me to purchase and asking for Name & Email address then another screen came up wanting Credit Card details. I thought why not so I completed? "the transaction then had to go out and on returning home activated the programe again asking the programe to remove the items located. Again the screen asked for Credit Card details. Am I to assume therefore that the first time the details were supplied they were for some reason not received at the other end. As a result of the foregoing it slowly dawned on me that I was getting out of my depth. I logged onto PF1 this proved interesting on going to the Forum up pops A small picture of a TV screen for HP Smart over the top of the Forum screen I then went to the Control Pannel to the Add/Remove File to find the NoAdware programe, which does not appear to be listed there. The Google Search Listed Ad-Aware which I took to be Ad_Aware If the program is not listed on the Add/Remove can I safely remove it from the program list where it shows as NoAdware on the C Drive? Any advice in Laymans terms will be appreciated grandad w   :help:

2005-04-04 10:01:00 | ****e, should have warned you about rogue malware cleaners (www.spywarewarrior.com), although, according to the note in the link, it has No-Adaware has mended it's ways. It could be a yet to be reigned in affiliate that has caused you the grief. Go to the PF1 Security FAQ's (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) for methods and safe programmes to use. It is very unlikely that No-Adaware will not just uninsatll by deleting it. It will have made numerous changes and be hiding in nooks and crannies including an advert server. BTW, grab the MS Antispyware (www.microsoft.com) beta tool. It's not yet listed in the PF! FAQ's but it's pretty good even if it doesn't check or clean a lot of non MS applications. I use it along with Spybot S&E (in Advanced Mode) and Adaware. PS. I see a line of * appeared in place of the word s*i*te, neat trick. Is that word a baddy?

2005-04-04 12:56:00 | MS Antispyware will only run on 2000, XP, Windows Server™ 2003 according to their site. Ad-Aware is probably a better bet for now, its very easy to use as well. | Miranda (6594) | |
2005-04-05 05:12:00 | :o It gets Curiouser and Curiouser as Alice said A look at Windows Explorer reveals that the NoAdware I,666 KB Application Folder appeared in the programe file on the 21/03/05 at 14.44hrs (At that time I wasnt aware that I had a problem) The problems I was concerned about were not being aired on PF1 untill 23.37hrs on the 23/03/2005. On 04/04/05 the following files were added noadaware 3_032905 2148KB NA File 04/04/05 13.11 unins000 3KB DAT File 04/04/05 13.08 unins000 76KB Application 04/04/05 13.08 Further poking about on the site revealed that the offer would last 45 days but none of the items found would be removed. They will scan and report only. Now the problem is do I purchase on the strength of the following information about NoAdware on this site www.spywarewarrior.com NoAdware has taken aggressive steps to reign in its affiliates (who were primarily responsible for the unsavory advertising) and released a new version of NoAdware (version 3.0)***** that addresses our concerns with false positves. Given these changes we can no longer regard NoAdware as "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware. ****(which is the version now installed on my computer) Given that like a lot of folk who drive cars and know very little of what makes them go the same analogy would apply to myself regarding computers. It would seem that I could cause even more mayhem by trying to delete the programe As Murray P so rightly says It is very unlikely that No-Adaware will not just uninsatll by deleting it. It will have made numerous changes and be hiding in nooks and crannies including an advert server. I am thankful for the generosity afforded me by the folk responding to my problems Again Any advice in Laymans terms will be appreciated grandad w  :o

2005-04-05 06:33:00 | I down loaded the Free offer the programe scanned my systems and came up with the following:- ITEMS FOUND:- W32/Noala.b@lvHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\RegValue (Danger Severe) Memory 0,Registry1, Cookies52, Files0,If you are unsure about this being a false positive, just created to get you to buy their product then scanning your machine with a different reputable anti-spwyare product (or two) should be able to confirm or deny this item being present. After asking the program to scan my system, believing that this was a Free trial I was asked to Register this sent me to another screen wanting me to purchase and asking for Name & Email address then another screen came up wanting Credit Card details. Again the screen asked for Credit Card details. Am I to assume therefore that the first time the details were supplied they were for some reason not received at the other end.Did you observe all the security precautions about giving out your credit card details online? That is, making sure it uses a secure server, that there are physical contact details (street address, landline phone numbers etc) for the company first? I would check with your bank and see if you have been billed by that company yet. You should also make contact with that company immediately and see if they have received your details and why your paid product does not register this now. Personally, if they haven't received your credit card details, then cancel out and don't give it to them. I logged onto PF1 this proved interesting on going to the Forum up pops A small picture of a TV screen for HP Smart over the top of the Forum screenThat is just an ad that is being run on PF1 at the moment, and is not indicative of spyware being present. Now the problem is do I purchase on the strength of the following information about NoAdware on this site www.spywarewarrior.com I would not. I can't even find any mention of what price is involved on their website, the only contact details is an email address and support is also only available via email. There is no privacy policy mentioned either and the whole website reeks of lack of information. To me this just sounds unprofessional and with their history, I would give them a VERY wide berth. There are plenty of reputable anti-spyware programs which are easy to use. Here are two: Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) - is free, but the developer accepts donations if you appreciate his software. Ad-aware SE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) - again, has a free and paid version. I am very concerned with you handing out your credit card details so easily over the internet. Please make sure you check out a site thoroughly for their policies, contact details and what sort of security they give for your credit card transaction first. :)

2005-04-05 23:14:00 | I agree with you entirely Jen . Grandad, if you've entered credit card details, check your transactions and have the card changed for good measure . I'm going to email the Spyware Warrior rogue list with the deytails of that website . Seems NoAdaware has not tried hard enough to reign in their affiliates plus, any repackager (they don't make software) who sets up a dubious affiliate program and bases their business (initially) on other peoples code is suspect themselves . BTW, I have no problems with purchasing online . You do need to take precautions though as per Jens advice .

2005-04-06 00:56:00 | Thank you Jen And Murray P For taking the time to respond to my quandary I have been checking my Credit Card Account and there are no unauthorized entries. With regards to Virus protection the perceived advice that I have been receiving is that it is not wise to have more than one system at a time as they could work against each other. I am at present using Nortons 2002AntiVirus In relation to Firewalls/Ad protection I am not sure if I would cause more mayhem by installing Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-aware SE on top of the Mess I have already created. If you feel that I would not further compound the problem I would be happy to download either one of the above suggested systems Again thank you for taking the time to assist this Novice :) grandad w

2005-04-06 01:33:00 | Yes, one AV product at a time. Norton's 2002 is getting a bit long in the tooth, perhaps better than nothing, but IMO it's dog tucker time. AVG free would be an able replacement/upgrade. Yes, do install Spybot S&E (choose/run in expert mode) and Adaware free. Install via the links in the PF1 security FAQ's to ensure they are the genuine articles. Use them both, they are complementary. Update them both as soon as you install them, use the Immunise feature in Spybot after every update to protect against new nasties. I use Spybot as my main startup anti-spyware programme (loads in background) while I did not give Adaware permission to startup with the Windows but, use it one demand to supplement Spybot. Doing it this way limits the number of resource hungry programmes from running until I need them. You may decide to have Adaware rather than Spybot as your default, choose whichever suits you best as the startup (deny both at first, automatic startup can then be enabled for your choice in the programmes preferences/options settings).

2005-04-08 02:39:00 | Hi to Murray P & Jen Also to the other members who contributed to this thread Thank you for taking the time to respond to my problem. I have now downloaded the two programes Spy Bot & Ad_aware. And have had a really good clean out. The whole process was very interesting. I was amazed at the amount of rubbish accumulated since Jan.2001 I went back to the NoAdware V3 which started the problem and ran it. With the result that all the rubbish it found originally with the exception of (W32/Noala.b@lvHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\RegValue Danger Severe) had disappeared Which they describe as follows Worm that spreads Via Email and networks, reported to cause strange things to occur on your PC I also checked on "Norton's Encyclopedia" but could not find it amongst the "W32s" It would appear that Jens Comment If you are unsure about this being a false positive, just created to get you to buy their product then scanning your machine with a different reputable anti-spwyare product (or two) should be able to confirm or deny this item being present. Has proved to be correct Thank you all I have really appreciated the help you have given to this Novice grandad w :) :) :)
