| 337137 | 2005-03-23 09:36:00 | My old Win98 system was big on scandisc - especially when re-booting following an improper close down! Now I have Win XP. How do i do a scan (check) of the HDD with XP? (There does not seem to be a ""ScanDisc" app in System Tools.) |

It also can be found under System Tools under the Start Menu (somewhere). I was wondering the same thing a couple of days ago and was given the same answer via an IT person at Mrs Misty's firm. When I activated it the accessory seems to be concerned about freeing up disc space rather than checking the disc for flaws. Is this really the same - I have grave doubts ?!?! | 337142 | 2005-03-23 09:50:00 | Under the tools tab, there is also a disk cleanup function which does some routine tidying up of temp files etc. Do you not have a checkdisk option as well? Are you logged on as Admin at the time? |

Misty :xmouth: chkdisk info (www.microsoft.com) Disk Cleanup is another program altogether ;) Assuming that your drive is formatted with NTFS, then there isn't a real need to continously run disk checking programs... |

At work I just go straight to the C (or D) drive icon in My Computer to access check disk. I know NT4 also has the cleanup option under the drive properties > tools. |

Yes, I have located it thanks Jen, it gives headings of "error checking", then "check disc options" and then says it needs exclusive access to Windows and that if I chose it will do when I re-boot . I have to say, on reflection that the first part of your answer is not the same as Mrs Misty's IT people . Once again I have to eat "humble pie", will this never end, will I never learn !! :blush: At least I have taken on board something . :) Misty |
