336924 2005-03-22 21:52:00 Hey everyone...hope all are in good spirits today...

Help me out. My computer after being turned off won't boot back up unless I have unplugged it AND removed the battery for about 5 minutes...everytime.

If I don't do this, it will just hang at the hp screen

what's going on????

336925 2005-03-22 23:22:00 I've had that happen on a laptop before. Turned out that the battery must have a certain minimum amount of power before it would boot, even if plugged in to the mains.

So leave the machine plugged in but turned off for a few hours, to charge the battery. Only then will the battery be good enough to stand on it's own two feet.

If that doesn't do it, the battery may be due to die from old age.

336926 2005-03-23 04:41:00 What sort of machine is this? Is it a laptop? If so, and it's the "main" battery you're referring to, that battery is probably dead, and you are overloading its power supply.

If it's a desktop, and you mean the little "coin" battery which maintains the BIOS settings, there is some real problem.;)

Please post back, with some more information.

336928 2005-03-28 01:17:00 It means that there is a serious problem with the PC booting off even default settings.

Go into the BIOS after reinserting the battery and instead of restoring DEFAULT settings, restore FAIL-SAFE settings. Then see if it will boot.

336930 2005-03-29 02:39:00 It would be unusual for a dead lithium cell to cause problems like this. Removing it makes a difference, anyway.

One very subtle thing which can catch you is that a BIOS password "removed" by removal of the lithium cell can be "remembered" after a while, and stop you again unless you explicitly set the BIOS to not have passwords, and save the settings. ;)

Is the HP screen waiting for a password?
