336758 2005-03-22 07:39:00 For the past few years my wife has been producing a magazine which is then sent to the printers as camera ready copy after been produced in MS Word and then layed up and pasted on the pages ready to be photographed and then printed.

She is a few weeks away from producing a new issue and has suddenly been advised that the printer has now moved into the 21st century and now requires all copy as a digital file.

Apparently they require the files as a PDF format.
MS Word doesn't have an option to save a file as a PDF.

I believe Adobe Acrobat, Corel Draw, Pagemaker can all produce PDF documents.

Question Can any of these programs import a MS Word file and convert it to PDF, or could the printer do as such?

If we have to purchase a program which would be the better for a user of MS Word or Quark to get up to speed quickly.

What's the cost or would it be cheaper to find another printer.... :D

Any suggestions welcome as this needs to be sorted quickly...

I use Acrobat 6 for this. This software uses a printer driver to create the PDF file and so, it appears, does this.

This one appears to be free.

Found by typing into Google "PDF create free"

Heaps of hits.

336760 2005-03-22 08:07:00 OpenOffice can convert documents into the PDF format with a single click. The software is free and can run alongside MS Office without any problems.

You can also use a free PDF creator such as Pdf995 (http://www.pdf995.com/), but there are other similar products available. :)

336762 2005-03-22 08:22:00 Also I think this download will give you Danny's Power Draw tools which use Open Office to do what you want:

prdownloads.sourceforge.net

From here:

From here:
sourceforge.net creates PDF's natively, you don't need to download anything extra for this

That download link is for a quote:
"This is a collection of drawing power tools for OpenOffice.org Draw. It is delivered as a Draw document containing buttons which activate each power tool. Clicking a power tool button brings up a dialog box for that respective power tool. The default settings of each dialog box are sufficient to illustrate what that power tool does. Documentation, such as currently exists, is included in the package." - Danny's Draw Power Tools (www.ooomacros.org)

How does that create a PDF from a word document?

336765 2005-03-22 10:21:00 You need to download the Power Tools to see Jen. There is more in the package than what is mentioned in the blurb. zqwerty (97)
336766 2005-03-22 10:59:00 Looks like i'll have to check out open office then, gee I probably have a copy or several on some of those PC WORLD CD roms I have lying around the house... EX-WESTY (221)
336767 2005-03-22 11:16:00 You should experiment as soon as poss. The free solutions all tend to have some limitations that may or may not affect you. Often you end up with a line of text on each page advertising the convertor. PaulD (232)
