337872 2005-03-25 04:23:00 Should I select DIRECT3D or do I use Open GL
A few words of explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks

337873 2005-03-25 04:44:00 Directx and openGL are a layer of software that lets the game talk directly to the hardware, improving performance and adding bells and whistles (as in shader suport is written into an update in directx rather then as an update to the OS)

OpenGL was considered to be superior to DX but in much the same fashion as the browser wars the MS product soon dominated.

As to which one you should use?

You usually don't have any choice, Changing the configurations under the openGL tab within the graphics card settings won't have any effect on a game designed to run on DX,and due to Flight Sim being an MS game there is no chance that it runs under OpenGL.

At a guess i would say that games that use OpenGL represent less then 5 to 10 percent of new releases

337874 2005-03-25 04:52:00 Thanks Metla, I'll srick with direct 3d then.
I am trying to get brighter light. With time set at mid afternoon in summer and not a cloud in the sky I get the impression of an overcast day. The picture is clear but no sign of sunlight.

How is the new card Jack? Big improvement? Because certainly the CPU should be enof from the specs of the game. How was the graphics with your old card? You mentioned hazy, could you see the buildings when you are flying. What frame you getting now? Just wondering cos MS suggested a very low graphics card.

When you pressed ESC you only have 3 options of exit flight, view flight analysis or continue flying. So maybe the keyboard way is the only way.

337881 2005-03-26 07:31:00 You generally don't fiddle with the settings in there unless you know what each thing doing. Games usually specify their own DirectX, OpenGL settings so you don't have to change much in the control panel.
