2005-03-24 05:28:00 | Hi, I have recently upgraded my video card, Ram, motherboard and Hardrive. My motherboard is a MSI KT6 Delta-FISR and I brought 2x512mb pc3200 Vdata Ram chips as well as a Seagate 80GB SATA Hardrive. My Ram and Hardrive only arrived yesterday so last night I attempted to install windows XP trial (sp1). I got to the initial part of the setup where it loads all the basic drivers and yes I even remembered to install the SATA driver. After doing that it told me "setup is starting windows" or something like that (presumably to begin the next part of the setup). The problem is it just hangs on that screen for about 30 seconds then turns the whole machine off. I turned it back on and the bloody thing tells me "Windows NT has not found enough extended memory.7MB of extended memory is required to run Windows NT. You may need to upgrade your computer or run a configuration program provided by the manufacturer". Thats funny here was me thinking I had 1024mb of RAM! So I took out one of the chips thinking that perhaps it wouldnt recognize more than 512mb (no idea why it wouldn't). Still didn't work so I changed the Ram into a different slot. This time it recognized the RAM but once again hung at the "setup is starting windows" screen. I repeated the same thing in the third Ram slot and setup did the same thing once again. Problem is now setup doesn't recognize any RAM no matter what slot it is in. I tested both cards using memtest-86 (version 3.2) and they have no errors. I also tried running setup with a different 512mb Ram chip to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? | pacmam (7687) | |
2005-03-24 05:44:00 | You could try running your ram at a lower speed if your bios supports it and see if that makes a difference. | Overdrive_5000 (4950) | |
2005-03-24 06:03:00 | Update the BIOS, there have been fixes relating to exactly this problem, also fixes for sATA etc. Download the newest and give it a go, if you still have the problem after, well, something else but I'd try that first. I jsut read a whole lot about it on MSIs help site. | pctek (84) | |
2005-03-24 07:37:00 | Thanks for all your advice . I downloaded the latest version of the bios for my motherboard but I am having some difficulty installing it as I have never had to update a bios before . The MSI bios readme tells me i should do this: . Boot your system from a Win98 or WinME boot-floppy . How to make boot floppy in case your dont have it ready: For Win9X, You can type [C:\ format a:/s] from the DOS prompt . For WinMe, You can make a boot floppy from control panel--> add/remove program-->make boot floppy . Remove autoexec . bat & config . sys file if there's any . For Win2000, there's no way to make boot floppy, so you have to either use Win9X or WinME boot floppy . For WinXP, you can make a DOS boot disk . Go to Your Computer, right click drive A:, select Format, select copy system files . 7 . When you get the A:\ prompt, type the following sequence: C: <enter> cd\test <enter> C:\test> awdfl783m BIOS file (to save or not to save old BIOS is the users decision) 8 . Reboot your system when prompted I gave what they said a whirl but as i have no C drive it was impossible so I tried to execute it from floppy which didn't work either . Please help me I just forked out about $900 on new parts and it would be really disapointing if it isn't working for my lan party next friday .

2005-03-24 08:17:00 | Go here http://www.bootdisk.com and download a bootdisk put it on a floppy and then change the bootdisk in BIOS to the floppy. That BIOS u downloaded, whats the filename?? when u unzipped it? if u unzipped it? If u can put it on floppy the file u downloaded u can then boot it from that floppy. Just boot from the floppy then type awdfl783m (or whatever the filename is, in that BIOS update zip file. And the name of the file name of that BIOS update. This way u can update from floppy not from the hdd.

2005-03-24 08:19:00 | Looking at the information about your mainboard from the MSI website... I notice this... Supports six memory banks using three 184-pin DDR SDRAMs. Supports up to 3GB memory size. Supports DDR400/DDR333/DDR266/DDR200 SDRAM Supports six memory banks using three 184-pin DDR SDRAMs. Does this mean you should have 3 RAMs or more? Supports DDR400/DDR333/DDR266/DDR200 SDRAM Is your RAM fast enough or too fast? I hope I helped... don't buy another stick of RAM until you are sure you need it!!! ;)

2005-03-24 08:57:00 | Nuh pacmams RAM speed is fast enough, I think he running DDR400 Even if he was running faster RAM, it wouldn't run any faster than the motherboards specs (set in BIOS) And as for the amount of RAM; he only needs to populate the bank with 2 sticks Pacmam...are you sure you are seating the RAM correctly? It really should only go in one way, but if its not in correctly it won't be picked up

2005-03-24 09:05:00 | I posted the exact command on Trademe help for your BIOS update. And yes, if you don't have a boot floppy, download one as the other person has said.

2005-03-24 10:03:00 | Sorry. I have flashed my bios to the latest version but it now freezes on setup when it says "setup is checking you system configuration" or something like that. Yes my Ram is installed correctly I've put together computers quite a few times before I've just never had these problems. Thanks | pacmam (7687) | |
2005-03-24 10:13:00 | Try setting the BIOS back to its default settings . Then reconfigure whatever, then save . Then see what happens .
