337545 2005-03-28 10:24:00 I didn't say the CPU was unimportant, I just feel that the price difference won't justify the performance difference for the higher-end CPU's.

Sure, you'll notice a difference between a sempron 2400+ and a AMD64 3500+ when you're doing CPU-intensive tasks. But, for a casual gamer and occasional video editor, does the price difference justify the performance difference?

ninja edit: that example aside, I'd actually pick an Athlon 2800XP+ for this range of system.

(and as an aside, RAM quantity and speed is typically the bottleneck for most systems under heavy load, not CPU speed.)

PS: Oh, and for converting video tape to DVD, you'll need a TV tuner card, *I think* - I'm not an expert, but I don't think a VCR player will connect to most video cards. Something else to bear in mind.

337546 2005-03-28 10:37:00 The Athlon 2800 isn't in production anymore,and the mobo tech (Socket A) is 2 generations behind

The AMD Atlhlon 64 3000/3200 on a socket 754 Nforce3 is the place to look if on a budget, or the 939 Pin cpu's on an Nforce 4 if again, the budget can cover it.

Appreciate your help again :D

337548 2005-04-02 00:35:00 doesnt seem too bad.....do you think the psu is big enough? its only a 350W Prescott (11)
337549 2005-04-02 01:16:00 looks like a good system to me. robsonde (120)
337550 2005-04-02 01:24:00 It looks OK but that is more expensive than the one that Misty got. Granted, the processor is a step up from Misty's and the motherboard has more features on it BUT do you need those extras?? I wouldn't think so. In fact I bet you don't even know what those extra features are. :p

Personally, I think Misty's new rig would be ideal for what you require and can't understand why you are not interested in having the same.

337551 2005-04-02 04:29:00 because she really wants a mac but knows she will get crap for it so she is putting it off till certain members in the forum grow up?? plod (107)
337552 2005-04-02 05:23:00 oh wow. its funny reading this thread.

people going on about what sucks, and what is good, then they try to back it up with what they know. when really, what they know, is absolutley wrong in the first place.

MAC CPU's, eg, the IBM Power PC's which is what the apple uses, dont have the same speed ratio as the Intels and AMD's, and saying a PC is more powerful than a MAC, is just damn stupid, go take a wonder over to the Apple website, and check out the Dual IBM Power PC 64Bit G5 machines. And saying a MAC is more powerful and the a PC is also rubbish.....it just depends on how much money you have...both sides offer incredibly good hardware.

and for PC gaming being better on a PC because of Full screen features i saw someone say in a reply......LOL, i guess you havent seen the 30" wide screen Cinema style Apple TFT's...

i work on Dual G4 MAC's all day and come home to a Windows 64Bit machine, and both can hold there own against each other. apart from software.....everything you need on a MAC comes with a MAC, and looks so damn sweet to boot.

so in the end.....i would get a...... Windows Machine.
becuase MACs arnt always for beginners...there isnt as much support widley available out there for beginners if you are stuck with a serious problem as there is for Windows.

peace.

337553 2005-04-02 05:44:00 In my experience - get the hardware with all the accessories - Else you'll end up 3 months later wishing you had onboard firewire when a friend brings over their new digital video camera.

And most onboard things like that don't add greatly to the cost of the motherboard anyway - and buying the same thing on a PCI card is a real rip-off.

Same goes for VIVO on the video card - Already I wish i'd bought a card with that (not that I dont mind getting an extra capture card if needed, but inbuilt on the video card is just simpler, and keeps the price down)

of course a USB sock warmer for an extra $2 is pretty pointless :D

1. Apple have been ordered by numerous orginsiations around the world to cease their false advertising. No one else has been able to replicate the fiugures apple come up with, If you believe the propaganda then you are not only naive but gullible as well.

2. What the hell has a fancy screen got to do with a comps abiliy to play games, its a perperial, not a component.Any computer can run a monitor,Only a comp with a killer video card can run games at a high standard.

3.No one was saying Mhz rating is a fair compere, and Apple definitly make super fast high end machines (excluding gaming machines) You just get a far faster and capable Windows machine for your dollars.

4. Your windows machine is 32 bit, even if you have a cpu with 64 bit capabilities they aren't being used.
