337619 2005-03-24 21:42:00 Did u press 3?? What happened when u selected it? Nothing at all? Speedy Gonzales (78)
337620 2005-03-24 21:42:00 same as the normal startup only without the intro wav... i dont get anything but a scandisk DigitalMessiah (7649)
337621 2005-03-24 21:49:00 on the dell dimension 4600 is it possible to add a slave Floppy drive? i have a slot in my cabinet for one but i dont see any free ports on the motherboard... but maybe on the ribbons DigitalMessiah (7649)
337622 2005-03-24 22:05:00 Nope, unless the mobo has a floppy connection, I doubt u can add a floppy to an IDE connection as a slave . IDE has 40 pin, a floppy has 34 pins .

Not enough pins . This sounds like a system where Dell left out the connection for the floppy altogether . . .

The only way you'll get a floppy in, is to buy a USB floppy, if her system has USB on it .

BUT then, ME may HAVE to detect it before u can use it . And whether there's a USB option in the BIOS as well .

So, you can boot from a USB device / floppy .

And by the looks of it, what u posted ME doesnt have a command prompt option after u press F8 .

So, it'll be a bit hard, even if u have the CD . Since you cant use a DOS prompt .

337623 2005-03-24 22:19:00 well what if i took ONE of my cd rom drive's out and added the floppy in it's place? DigitalMessiah (7649)
337624 2005-03-24 22:24:00 Nope. coz cd's use 40 pin the same as a hard drive. That wont work either. Speedy Gonzales (78)
337625 2005-03-24 22:26:00 so there is no way to get the ME computer to boot from CD ? cuz i have a System Restore CD for that computer.... and use a windows xp disc to FDISK and upgrade? DigitalMessiah (7649)
337626 2005-03-24 22:32:00 Oh so the ME pc doesnt have a CD either?? If not then u can chuck one of yours in her PC .

That'll work . Just dont put the cd on the same connection as a hard drive .

Umm u could install the CD / boot from the CD (change the bootdisk in BIOS to CD), and restore whatever on her PC no prob at all .

Put it by itself on the secondary ide connection (If this PC has a secondary IDE connection) .

BUT has your XP been installed on yours?? If so, NOT a good idea installing it on your mom's . It MAY install, BUT getting it to activate, maybe another matter .

337627 2005-03-24 22:36:00 no no my mom already has a cd rom drive.. i was just asking if it was possible to get the CD to boot first... but since you covered all that in your post ill try it as soon as i find the disc... i just misplaced it lol DigitalMessiah (7649)
337628 2005-03-24 22:45:00 i got some bad news . . . i ran the system restore and it says there is no FAT32 on the computer while i KNOW for a FACT that it IS a fat32 . . . any ideas?

EDIT: also i got into dos after running the cd . . . . i try to type C:\ and it says invalid drive specification . . and i KNOW that is what my hard drive used to be on

EDIT 2: then again . . . i think the windows 98 SE was the fat32 . . . i dont rightly remember what the 10 gig is . . . . damn . . .
