337526 2005-03-25 02:29:00 People, people!!!

Whilst it's clear the PC vs Mac thing is 'strongly opinionated' - can you tell me then, what a PowerPC G4 1.25GHz processor would be equivalent to in the P4 or AMD Athlon range? I'm talking GHz as I heard (note heard) that the GHz comparisions are different - i.e. A Mac 2GHz wouldn't be the same as a P4 2GHz (this is just an example).

Yours for the opinion bashing :badpc:

337527 2005-03-25 02:36:00 well here goes ....Pc are faster and i don't think any mac person will dispute that?????.Best thing is to go have a look in person at an apple specialist shop. plod (107)
337528 2005-03-25 02:39:00 People, please don't use this thread to start a round of OS bashing.

Princess is asking for factual answers to her questions, keep to the clear cut facts without delving into personal tiff's. Why do people like to bite when they see the word Mac?

Different OS's/systems suit different purposes, and if a person can educate themselves to the differences each brings (pro's and con's), then they can make an informed choice. Informed choice is good

Because after seeing a view that doesn't agree with yours you immediately assume the other party has never used the item being discussed.

Because Mac user's take a slur against Apple personally.(this cracks me up,like you think that Windows slur will have the same effect on me,Lmao)

Because you think your preference for a certain item makes it "value for money", when it is quite clearly way over priced and underpowered.

And lastly, because all you managed to do was repeat your earlier assumption that you pulled from thin air, As if this somehow gives it credence.

Infact the very fact anyone would put forward that Mac as a worthwhile purchase just goes to show an irresponsible bias based on what suits them and no other factors.

There is no equilivent in the Atlhon or P4 range, they gave up making cpu's of that performance level way back in the day .

What you should be looking at is what sort of performance level you would get in the same price range,

$1800 bucks would get you a 17" lcd, a killer cpu,a gig of ram,Dual Layer DVD Writer,120gb harddrive, and a capable video card . . . .

At long last, I feel I am getting abit more useful info . . . this is the detail I want - perhaps abit more . . . . My budget ranges up to $2500 (need to include printer in this price) .

Could I have some recommended brands and types of lcd screen (preferred), as I know there are several different lcd screens . . . what is a 'killer cpu' - brand? name one for example please  . . . . . . . what about video card (name and type to suit budget) . . . . . . . sound card??? . . . . . . .

I know I want 512MB+ and that my budget could easily get me a computer with 120GB, possibly more? LCD seems standard in the packages I have been looking at . What is RAID, SATA?

Can anyone give me detailed specs to look for in a package, name that video or sound card so that I can atleast sound like I know what I'm talking about when I speak to computer dealers

In addition, I see that when you sign up on Broadband, you have to purchase a kit to set things up? I hear this includes a modem??? Would it then be ok to buy a pc without a modem (I know that sounds really 'durrrr . . . ' but believe me - it's a clear question) . . .

Be nice now . . . . . and welcome your :2cents:
:D

337532 2005-03-25 05:55:00 It really depends on what you want to use the computer for.
Having the fastest processor available or the best video card is not really necessary if you are not going to use applications that can take advantage of them.
Most new computers whether PC or Mac regardless of processor speed or other specs can handle the average users requirements fine.

As for the modem you might as well accept it as you won't save anything as they are very cheap anyway and gives you an alternate connection method if your broadband is down.

Remember that the advice you get here is generally from advanced computers users whose requirements are vastly different from the normal home computer user who is not into online gaming and downloading and running huge video files and running other applications that require high spec computers.
Remember too that a PC will require an additional firewall, anti-virus program, spyware removal programs and the need to continually run them and keep them updated.

337533 2005-03-25 11:36:00 And a Mac will require software that has been either ported or specially made, and often will cost more than the PC equivilent. End. Edward (31)
337534 2005-03-25 11:52:00 everything princess has said she wanted to do a mac will come with the software already installed as part of the operating system... plod (107)
