2005-03-25 03:20:00 | Have got two ide drives full of good stuff on my desk - i bought a new sata drive computer and thought i transfer said data to the new one. layout is this: cd-rom dvd-rom floppy sata drive 120 gig sata drive 200 gig I'm trying to work out where to plug the ide drive in to transfer the data. Have tried pulling cd-rom plug and plugging in drive jumpered for cable select /master/slave...nothing works Have used bus 2 but computer hangs.... Dya think i maybe have to re-jumper the sata drives? I go fishing now and again and can use them as sinkers but i'd rather haul the info of them Help a homer Cheers

2005-03-25 03:29:00 | So the SATA is onboard (on the motherboard)? If not, you'll have to buy a motherboard with SATA onboard, or a SATA PCI Card If so, the IDE's go on the IDE Primary connection, on the motherboard, as Master and Slave. (Go into the BIOS and put Primary IDE Master/Slave on AUTO). The CD and DVD on the Secondary IDE connection, Master and Slave. (Also put Secondary IDE Master/Slave on AUTO, in the BIOS). SATA drives don't have jumpers. There should be an option in BIOS for Primary 3rd and 4th Master. (If the mobo has 2 SATA connections on it). This is for SATA. Also, for SATA if onboard, the cable that comes with the SATA is data only, NOT power. U need a SATA power adaptor, or a power supply with a SATA power adaptor on the end of it. Are you using XP??

2005-03-25 03:49:00 | IDE Primary (IDE1) should be the coloured (blue in your case) slot. Use IDE1 for PATA (Non SATA drives) The other one (IDE2 - Secondary) is where you plug the DVD, CD drives as master and slave.

2005-03-25 03:54:00 | There's usually 2 IDE connections on the mobo . Primary and Secondary . They should be labelled Primary or Secondary, on the mobo . Yup the primary connection on the mobo MAYBE BLUE OK sounds like you have the 2 SATA's and 2 cd's on the secondary ide Master/Slave connection . (The blue connection on the mobo maybe the Primary IDE) You can put the 2 ide hdds on the Primary IDE as Master and Slave . And also jumper them to Master and slave on the back of the Ide hdd's . And also, go into the BIOS and put the Primary IDE Master/Slave on AUTO . After that, just make sure the SATA drive if this is the drive with XP on it, is set up as the bootdisk . . . . And save the settings in the BIOS . Then reboot . Then u can copy whatever u like from the IDE's . IF what u want to copy are program files that have been installed, THEN reinstall the programs from cd or re-download them from the Net again . Otherwise, the programs wont work properly . Word docs, email addresses from the address book, bookmarks small things like that can be copied to the SATA .

2005-03-25 04:08:00 | No worries :) If u have a spare IDE cable with a blue connection on one end, use it . Connect the blue end to the motherboard connection .

2005-03-25 07:51:00 | OK sounds like you have the 2 SATA's and 2 cd's on the secondary ide Master/Slave connection. (The blue connection on the mobo maybe the Primary IDE) How do you put sATA drives on an IDE connection?

2005-03-25 08:01:00 | How do you put sATA drives on an IDE connection? You dont if u have SATA onboard. I think Dick Smith has a few adaptor boards for this tho.

2005-03-25 08:17:00 | Adaptor boards are fantastic - they do what most motherboards do, just on a separate board. | Growly (6) | |
