| 338410 | 2005-03-27 04:00:00 | Hi all. I am installing Damn Small Linux on a laptop (267Hz) and a dssktop (456Hz). I am connect to the Internet via a Paradise Cable Model and have a static IP Address which I can specify. I also have a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway address. When I try to set up the network card under Damn Small Linux, it asks for the above, plus it also asks for: 1. Use DHCP broadcast - when selected it says "sending DHCP brioadcast from device eth00 then 2. When you select no it askes for the IP address (I get this bit) 3. Network mask (255.255.255.0) 4. then it asks for the Boradcast address ????????? 5. Then default gateway which I have 6. then name server which it defaults to 206.13.28.12 but nothing happens when I try to connect. Thank you in advance for any help. Regards Richard DHCP broadcasting address and a name server address. I have tried putting in no entries and even had a crack at making some logical guesses |

| 338411 | 2005-03-27 12:21:00 | Lets get things straight first. What device supplies the DHCP to the computers, is it your modem?, also does it do routing? Does the computer's network card (eth0) receive a DHCP IP from the modem, or is this static? If static then what is the IP/netmask, e.g. 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0 The modem is the gateway right, so what's it's IP/netmask. e.g. 192.168.0.1/0.0.0.0 why 0.0.0.0? because that means it'll accept all, being a gateway else if you limit it to 255.255.255.0 it'll only work off that netmask/subnet. Broadcast IP is usually (if settings are similar above) 192.168.0.0 Name server is whatever your ISP's DNS IP is. Hopefully there's some answers within what I've just said. Cheers, KK |
