| 338276 | 2005-03-26 20:22:00 | Stuck in setup. I had a problem with my modem. Windows said it was working OK, but for no apparent reason when I tried to connect, I got the message "...Cannot start dialing..". I tried re-installing the modem, same result. Looked through the internet settings, nothing unusual. I decided to try re-installing Windows 2000. Or repairing it. I started the setup, and picked "Upgrade " to try to save all my programs. Setup went OK, (I tried to get to the "R" repair the instalation, but was denied access. .."Pick which instalation you want to log onto, " ..When I picked the only one there, it asked me for the Administraors password. Originaly I didn't specify a password. .."Invalid password.." I never entered an administrator password. Anyway , tried to "Upgrade with setup CD. Setup went OK ..got to the screen "Setup will now detect and install component like your mouse, keyboard ect. , ". Halfway through the sliding bar, the screen goes black and the system re-boots. I tried over and over and every time it reached that point the system does the same thing ,re-boots and starts the setup all over. Now I can't access the system at all. Every time I try to boot, I enter the setup program ,and it re-boot at the same place. Is there any way to remove the unfinished setup sequence from kicking in? What would cause setup to make the system re-boot? Any ideas/ Thanks | willcracker (7712) | ||
| 338277 | 2005-03-26 20:35:00 | Try here - www.pcworld.com If all fails, then try a reinstall, but pull out the modem first. Once you've got a sound install, get the latest modem driver, load that and then plug in the modem and point the intall to the new driver when asked. Good luck |

| 338279 | 2005-03-30 23:13:00 | You were right. After removing the modem, setup kept going. Setup 'Upgrade". The setup finished and the system seems fine. I have all my original programs intact. Many thanks | willcracker (7712) | ||
