337997 2005-03-25 11:28:00 Can I install IE6 straight over IE5 or should I uninstall IE5 first?
Any setup prob's likely?

337998 2005-03-25 11:33:00 It is much more better to take an extra step whenever you are installing a new version of a particular program. So, if I were you, I would uninstall IE5 and install IE6 after that. But, on the other hand, why don't you give Mozilla Firefox a try? Cheers :p Renmoo (66)

IE is integrally bound with the Windows operating system, and if you actually had the ability to uninstall IE5, it presupposes an old version of Windows and that it would then have IE4 remaining.

If it shipped with IE5, simply put you cannot uninstall it anyway.

My experience is that IE4 to IE6 is spectacularly unsuccessful, you need to do it incrementally.

So leave IE 5 alone and just install over it.

But it would really help to know the version of Windows, as to IE6 even being appropriate.

Sorry but I cannot therefore agree with jameskan in this case.

338000 2005-03-25 14:41:00 My 2nd hand computer came with IE5 installed.
Shortly after, when I still knew virtually nothing about computers, I found there was a more recent version. So I blithely installed IE6 on top of it, not even considering an uninstall first. No idea about such things - and obviously hadn't joined PF1!
Actually, that's given me no noticeable problems since.

Version 6 is recognised on my machine by both the old Aida32 & Belarc Advisor.
However, each time I delete Temp files etc by way of ToniArts Easicleaner I see that I have History IE5.
Been happily ignoring that until now - when it seemed like a thread to post in...
.
But I'm mindful that Woody wants an answer.

Jameskan's giving the standard version of everything (uninstall the old before installing the new) but
godfather's version is what I'd go with, as it worked for me.
Interesting that he suggested IE5 couldn't be uninstalled anyway... but this late tonight I don't care about Why.
Tomorrow I probably will.
Hey, godfather...??

338002 2005-03-25 21:35:00 it is virutally impossible to UNinstall IE............. drcspy (146)
338003 2005-03-25 22:40:00 The only problem would be that you are still using IE. :p
Use firefox :D
Seriously why would you wish to install IE 6 when firefox is available and ready to make your browing safer and more user friendly.

338005 2005-03-25 23:02:00 pctek .

You assume the poster had XP? I think not though, as XP would not have IE5, so suggesting that is possibly just confusing the issue for the poster .

Laura

The directory structure for IE6 is still "IE5", so ignore it, it is like that on all IE6 systems, upgraded or not .

For clarity I will again repeat what I have determined over the years, do not try to uninstall IE if upgrading it .

If you can uninstall to an earlier version, its usually counterproductive . If there is no earlier version, you cannot uninstall it anyway .

Highlander if you are wanting to lead people to firefox
you may need to work on your delivery :)

The new Mozilla Firefox browser is available free here (www.mozilla.org)
Its easy to use, fast and imported all my IE settings.
