2005-03-25 23:07:00 | Just adding to GF's comments, if the OS is Win95, then IE6 can't be installed anyway, IE5.5 +SP2 is the highest version. | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2005-03-25 23:19:00 | due to a large amount of sicurity issues and that MS proberly isn't making updates for IE5 anymore i would upgrade to IE5.5 at the very least tho IE6 is preferred unless you have a very slow pc. just install IE6 over IE5. however a few things to note.....make sure your pc is spyware free and IE5 isn't damaged to much. backup emails as outlook is also upgraded (as well as media player) in case emails get lost in the upgrade. if it dosn't fails to upgrade you may have to remove IE before installing IE6. theres a nice litle program called IEradicator which can break IE out. its always a good idea to use an alternative browser (such as opera, firefox, mozilla, netscape) but seeing as a fair few programs require IE its best to get IE as sicure as possible.

2005-03-26 00:02:00 | Hi Woody. Your original post "Can I install IE6 straight over IE5 or should I uninstall IE5 first? Any setup prob's likely?" has almost been beaten to death with red herrings. Yes you can and should install 6 straight over 5. And no, there are generally no problems. All your Favourites and such like will be available in 6. Go to it if your system will support it. | Scouse (83) | |
2005-03-26 04:21:00 | Highlander if you are wanting to lead people to firefox you may need to work on your delivery :) The new Mozilla Firefox browser is available free here (www.mozilla.org) Its easy to use, fast and imported all my IE settings. Pete  I suggest, I do not lead I motivate , I do not cajole. and besides if everyone used firefox (or opera) I would have to pay for my own beer instead of recieving a copious, unending supply of the amber liquid from people who insist on using the cess pit that IE is.

2005-03-26 07:39:00 | To reinforce what tweak'e has said and add to Goddie's input. Whatever version of Windows you have, install the latest version of IE whether you use IE or not. Because IE is so embedded, upgrading and patching IE upgrades and patches Windows and many other MS software. I believe this is one of the reasons it has taken MS so long to update IE, rather than the reactionary patches you usually receive. It's a massive task to ensure that compatability is maintained with current and past versions of software. AFAIK, the upcoming new IE will be for Longwait and XP SP2 only.

2005-03-27 07:08:00 | Thanks all, I use V6 with Win XP but the query comes from a friend who uses a booking prog for his B&B and has been told by the operators of the booking system that he will have to change to V6 - he is currently running Win98 & IE v5 - hence my question. I'll try to help him but thought I'd better check with the experts first ! Tks for responses
