338922 2005-03-28 23:27:00 I keep getting a warning pop up on my laptop (Dell Lattitude C-810 with Windows 2000 pro) that reads: "winlogon.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program." Then my computer shuts off, and starts itself up again. It happens every ten minutes or so. I think it is related to some adware problems I have suffered from this week. What can I do to fix this? CompuGuy (7410)
338923 2005-03-29 00:39:00 Qu. did you install SP3 recently?

In the meantime, install Spybot +latest definitions and run that, just to ensure your malware problem is resolved.

338924 2005-03-29 01:47:00 can you boot into safe mode? what happens then? Prescott (11)
338925 2005-03-30 06:34:00 My laptop boots up in safe mode with no problems, and I was able to run AdAware Se, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Norton Antivirus without the computer turning off. I was able to delet numerous problems, but after rebooting in normal mode, the winlogon.exe error occurrs again.
I'll try spybot, but I'm looking for another suggestion. I don't think spybot will be any better than the three programs I've already run. Please help! :help:

338928 2005-03-30 09:15:00 You might be looking at a repair of Win2000 - Winlogon.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be Shut Down (support.microsoft.com). Make sure you read the links about what gets changed and what doesn't when you do a repair. You will need to reinstall all your service packs afterwards, so be very careful about going online without a good firewall up first and AV running. Jen (38)
338929 2005-03-30 09:21:00 Some malware are smart - so if you have system restore turned on then even if you delete the malware it will reinstall itself upon a reboot. Make sure you have it turned off and run all those progs again [in safe mode], ensuring ALL definitions are right up to date first. thepom (7654)
338930 2005-03-30 17:54:00 Okay, I thanks for all the responses to my problem . I will absolutely make sure that I have downloaded SP4, and I will once more run all of my sweeps (with updated definitions) while in safe mode . I hope that it works this time .

Thanks again .

338931 2005-03-31 05:21:00 Compuguy - my warning about System Restore, I hope you realised, was for Win XP and does not pertain to 2K . Ignore it :xmouth:

Whoops - I'm reading too many threads here - sorry . ;)

Hope the fault finding is going well .
