338912 2005-03-28 22:20:00 I have .tif images scanned into my W98/Office 97 computer. When I try to open the images in XP computer, also with Office 97, I get a blank picture reader box with the message 'no preview available' In fact the images can't be opened in XP at all, eg on Explorer, etc.
Suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Geoff

338913 2005-03-28 23:08:00 Hi Geoff

On the XP machine, just select that Windows Fax/Picture Viewer is to open the images. You can do this going into Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types. Scroll down till you find .TIF and click on it, then select "change" under the open with section. Select the above option, tick always use this program and then OK. Do the same for .TIFF file types.

Your suggestion is one I'd already tried, but the 'always use' box was already ticked. The snag is that the box & 'always use' line are faded, ie not able to be changed. I forget the correct term for this.

338915 2005-03-29 00:05:00 So you are saying that the XP fax/picture viewer doesn't open your .tif's or that you cannot change the file association to this because the "Always Open With" is greyed out? Jen (38)
338916 2005-03-29 00:29:00 Yup. Greyed out is the term. Which it is, as well as the 'Apply' button.
Further to this, I note that with internet download files transferred from my W98 computer to XP computer, no 'links' work. The XP computer came without disks, the o/s already installed, and I don't want to get the computer onto the web. I suspect that the .tif and link-less problems are something to do with MN Explorer?
When I click Windows Explorer, all I get is 'My Documents' window.

338917 2005-03-29 03:13:00 Hmm .. something is not right there. Do these files actually show a .tif or .tiff extension? You may need to change XP to show extensions for known file types, by going Tools > Folder Options > View and remove the tick from beside hide extensions for known file types. Are you given the option of changing any other file type when you highlight them eg .bmp or .doc or are they all greyed out?

With your "links" not working from files copied from the other machine, what sort of errors do you get? What are these "internet download files", do you mean .html files?

Clicking on the Windows Explorer whether from the Start Menu or from an icon will open up "My Documents" by default. There is a way of changing this if you prefer that it opened at a different location.

Yes, .tif/f file extensions are shown, and yes, I can change these extensions. The Restore button works okay, but both Cancel & Apply buttons are greyed out.
Yes, it's html files which have links to other pages attached - the links don't operate, even when I click to work offline.

338919 2005-03-29 04:42:00 If it's the Imaging for Windows (Kodak Image Viewer used for fax images in 95/98) your talking about, I found images created in 98 did not work in win2k (SP2 at the time). Sorry I can't remember the message I got, it was a while ago, but at least Win2k gave me one, anyway IIRC the upshot was the Imaging version and format had changed which is a bit strange because tif's are pretty universal, an MS thing I guess.

IIRC, rather than copying over via the network, I browsed to them and opened them at the location and Saved As. As there were a few and Imaging would only let me do one at a time which was getting tedious, (I think) I used Irfanview to batch convert the lot.

338920 2005-03-29 05:13:00 Yes, it's html files which have links to other pages attached - the links don't operate, even when I click to work offline. It sounds like the links are for external webpages and seeing your machine doesn't have internet access, then they cannot be downloaded off the net and displayed. Either that, or you haven't copied the full set of .html pages from the other machine. Jen (38)
338921 2005-03-29 05:40:00 Thanks Murray.Yup, you're right about Kodak Image Viewer, which I have. Your message made me think laterally - why not simply re-save .tif images in my W98 computer, as bitmap. I did and the images are fine in XP Picture/Fax Viewer!

And thanks, Jen. I'll look again at .html pages and recopy.
