| 338843 | 2005-03-28 10:42:00 | hi i have three hard drives from previous defunked PC, the guts of which are now dead and buried, i am wondering if there is a standard configuration for master +slave drives jumpers, additionally do i need to change any thing in the bios to run those extra drives as slaves, one by one to retrive the data? the existing quantum bigfoot is set Cs ( cable master / slave) the additional drives are 1: Quantum bibebadlcpd211? 2: conner - cjbzv4c 3: maxtor what if is any is the correct sequnce to follow in cmos> i seem to recal you have to enter the particluars of the slave drive - although only two have them noteated? i had hoped there was a simple modern way that let me just plug in a nice little usb cable with the drive mounted on the end ??? :D cheers will |

Main drive should be on MAster. The others set as slave with the jumpers. The slave drive gets connected on the same cable as the main drive. Then in the BIOS it should show up under Primary master, primary slave etc. And yes, you can buy an IDE to USB adapter gadget to use with hard drives, and then you just plug into a USB port. With XP it will just find it itself, Win98 you need to load the driver that is supplied with it. These gadgets are about $53 retail. There are also USB drive enclosures but thats better if you want the drive to use that way permanenetly. I find the adpater better as I often connect up the drive to a PC so don't want the hassle of having to remove it from its enclosure all the time. |

This means you don't have to change the jumpers and usually you can just carefully set the drive on top of the case (on something non-metal if it has exposed circuit boards on the bottom of the drive). Then power on, the drive should be detected automatically by the bios and then use Windows or whatever to copy the data to your main drive. Repeat until done (make sure the power is completely off before connecting/disconnecting drives). Cheaper than enclosures (I assume these drives are porbably really small and so you don't want to keep them - they are more likely to fail too). |
