338632 2005-03-28 00:38:00 Ok
after doing some reading it appears that i am allowed to install office 2003 professional on a laptop as well as my desktop, how do i do this as regards product activation, does the microsoft product activation know that this machine is a laptop as i do not want my desktop version disabled

Thanks

338633 2005-03-28 01:30:00 That provision applies to most versions of Office, but not to OEM versions.

And no, MS cannot tell if the second installation is a laptop or desktop, they just rely on your honesty....

338635 2005-03-28 02:11:00 Will MS know if the key has already been activated? and then deny activation for the second installation? Prescott (11)

That's correct, I have Office 2K3 Academic Edition. I installed it on my laptop and desktop, then following a format of my desktop HDD, when I installed it the 3rd time on the desktop I had to ring the MS landline and tell them what I was doing. They then reset the counter for your product. In my case I had to tell them I was re-installing due to a HDD format.

A long labourious task but shouldn't be a hassle for a legitimate copy of the software in question.

338637 2005-03-28 04:30:00 was there a message saying it has already been activated?, im thinking of buying office 2003 academic or pro for my pc's at home Prescott (11)
338638 2005-03-28 06:30:00 I have activated a full version of Office on a second PC (my laptop) and it just happened, no drama no issues.

There was nothing to indicate that it was already activated once.

338639 2005-03-28 09:52:00 Limited activations only apply to non OEM versions of software. If you have the full oem version of Office then you won't get any such messages.

Chiefnz, define "limited" and "full" in terms of OEM please?

OEM is OEM.
A Full Version by definition is not OEM.

OEM is usually limited to a single installation on the hardware with which it was purchased.

Full Versions, Academic Versions and Student and Teacher Versions are not OEM.

Your post confuses me....

338641 2005-03-28 10:19:00 I also have Office 2003 installed and activated on both laptop and desktop, using one set of discs.
No dramas :)
