338608 2005-03-27 21:41:00 Hi,
Im hoping I can get some help with networking my pc's, both systems are running xp home, and the second pc can use the internet through the host machine. unfortunately I get permission messages when I try to access files from each machine. to give an indication as to my screen display.
Local Area Conection Staus (Host Machine)
Address Type: Manually Configured
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:

Local Area Connection Status (2nd Machine)
Address Type: Manually Configured
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

when i go to "My Network Places" window 0n my host, I get a not accessible , contact system administrator etc message.
On my 2nd pc going to the same window I can see both pc's, but if i click on the host machine access is denied.
If I could get any direction I would be grateful

338611 2005-03-27 22:25:00 What kind of network have you got set up? Peer2Peer?

What kind of connection cable are you using? Crossover or Network?

338612 2005-03-27 22:28:00 crossover cable the_inspector (7721)
338613 2005-03-27 22:30:00 Any firewalls on either?

If so, you'll have to add each pc to it, if there's a firewall on both PC's.

338614 2005-03-27 22:34:00 yeah, running norton on both, how do I do that operation the_inspector (7721)
338615 2005-03-27 22:40:00 If u have Norton Internet Security .

Click on Personal Firewall, Home networking tab .

Click on Wizard on both PC's .

And then Next, a set of ips should appear (like 192 . 168 . 0 . 0, for ip and 255 . 255 . 255 . 2550 for mask) on both, press Next again . Thats it .

Both should have access to each other . If you have shared a folder on each .

338616 2005-03-27 22:46:00 my mistake, the host machine is using a norton firewall, and the second machine has a windows firewall the_inspector (7721)
338617 2005-03-27 22:49:00 Both computers are running xp correct?
What service packs are they using?

The reason I ask is that if they are service pack 1, the default firewall may be stopping the conncection.
