338386 2005-03-27 04:18:00 I have a 2 year old computer with a Socket A motherboard. (Socket A CPU? Excuse my ignorance...)
I would like to speed things up by changing the CPU from the current 1.3 GHz to 2.8 GHz.
My question is, if the new CPU is also Socket A, will it just be a simple out with the old and in with the new and maybe a little bit of tweaking?

I don't really want the hassle and expense of a whole new mb.

Cheers
Ian

338388 2005-03-27 04:51:00 indeede you may need to do a bios upgrade for the older mobo to support the new cpu..............I'd be quite suprised if you didn't.......... drcspy (146)
338389 2005-03-27 04:54:00 YOU SAID..will it just be a simple out with the old and in with the new ?

I SAY...no it won't. Like tweak'e suggests, the MB specs are important. I suggest you read your MB manual or go to the MB site and read it there. Download a copy if need be. The answers to all your qu. will be in that manual.

Good luck.

338390 2005-03-27 05:18:00 Or give us the link to the particular model on the motherboard manufacturers site. Everest Home Edition should get all the details if you can't find your manual etc.

I suspect it might support older Thoroughbred models, doubtful on Barton models.

338391 2005-03-27 08:43:00 It should take an AMD Sempron. Most do ok without a bios update but does depend on your motherboard model. pctek (84)
338392 2005-03-27 08:55:00 here is the link for everest (www.lavalys.com), it will tell you everything about your pc. Prescott (11)
