2005-03-29 00:35:00 | Although they did mention phishing and talked briefly of the Westpac phishing scam, it seemd fairly odd that they focused on the scenario of a (cough cough) hacker installing a keylogger in a internet cafe and not on the more organised threat posed by the combination of phishing and user ignorance. And when they got the hacker to give his advice at the end on how to be safer he didn't mention the whole phishing scenario and quite possibly gave the impression (which I'll guess was not his intention but the result of editing) that firewall/antivirus/OS updates was a solution when it is NO solution at all for phishing attacks. A simple 10 second quote saying "never respond to an email that asks you to confirm banking log in details, even if it appears to be from your bank. Ring the bank to check the veracity of the email" would have been a helpful addition ....

2005-03-29 05:13:00 | TV needs to have a Personal Computer TV show. It could be sponsored by a leading retailer and it could show tips. The nearest PC TV show we have is a "GamerTV". Security is never mentioned there. A leading retailer? Like who? There was a leading retailer once - PC Company. I wouldn't have trusted them to clean my screen.

2005-03-29 05:23:00 | I think we need Cr/Hacker TV. Jointly hosted by a Hacker and a Cracker. Each week they can start by re-iterating the difference between a Hacker and a Cracker, just so everyone is clear on that point. Then they can move on to inform the masses on how to install a water-cooling solution in their PC, how to run your own website off a Sinclair Z-80 using ultra-low profile Linux, and how to hack (or is that crack?) into your neighbours wireless network to get free Net access. I'm sure sponsors would flock to it ... ... let's face it, the yawning gulf between geeks and everybody else who knows how to turn their PC on is unlikely to be ever bridged by TV ....

2005-03-29 05:41:00 | Hmmm. I have to disagree, Computers are mainstream, and the problems that affect people are mainstream, I would imagine 20 minutes of useful content a week would be easy to come up with without delving into watercooling and such faux pas as calling a cracker a hacker. PC World half hour perhaps?, as you yourself have noted their is great interest from the public about digital photography, then you get basic maitence, software, gizmoes,Hardware etc etc... I could fill up 10 minutes (or 20) showing someone whats needed and how to go about pluging the audio out of there comp into their stereo...)

2005-03-29 05:47:00 | I think the problem is that even though you could do it, and be informative at a average user level, you are just unlikely to get advertising/sponsorship and without that no channel will carry it. Unless they bury it at 2pm on a Sunday atfernoon, pitting it against all the Sport. Technology focused programming seems to be unpopular with the networks nowadays, despite the fact that more people are using technology than ever before. There's not much in the way the old general gee-whiz aint it neat science programs (Fast Forward and their ilk) that used to play, let alone anything more focused. I just don't think the networks have the interest and they control the access.

2005-03-29 05:52:00 | True, It would be a commercial failure (unless we got Eva to host it, I would watch just about anything with a hot bint hosting it.....), Guess we are all destined to watch the ongoing saga of Nick and Waverly at 7pm instead. Speaking of Fast Foward, I stumbled across an old episode taped from a decade or so ago,It looked like a Dr Who set and they were insisting in 10 years time our watches would be phones, our cars would drive on water and our food would be geniticly modified soy..... Nice suits as well.

2005-03-29 05:58:00 | Technology focused programming seems to be unpopular with the networks nowadays I agree. They want to indocrinate the gullible and not educate and inform. How educative is "Survivor". One learning snippet "Don't eat bugs you might get sick."

2005-03-29 06:09:00 | Just been reading TVNZ's charter (corporate.tvnz.co.nz). They state they will (snippets of points): feature programming across all genres that informs, entertains and educates New Zealand audiences; feature programming that serves the varied interests and informational needs and age groups within New Zealand society, including tastes and interests not generally catered for by other national television broadcasters; feature programming that contributes towards intellectual, scientific and cultural development, promotes informed and many-sided debate and stimulates critical thought, thereby enhancing opportunities for citizens to participate in community, national and international life; and feature programming of an educational nature that support learning and the personal development of New Zealanders. Maybe requests for such programs needs to be made to them, a community service and protection issue? I doubt a 30 mins program will hold non-geeks attention spans long enough, and they probably wouldn't even bother tuning in to watch it. However, if it was done like the "food in a minute" ads whereby the same segment is played for 2 minutes during peak viewing for a week at a time, some of it must sink in. They could just keep it very simple and talk about one area each week. Give a website people can visit for further information and each weeks topic notes they can download. Ohhh ... there goes a flying pig!
