338932 2005-03-29 00:01:00 I have a p4 2.4 intel machine running XP pro. Since reformatting my system and reloading everything from scratch at Christmas, whenever I start the machine now it seems to take Windows quite a few minutes to go off and seach my entire system. I cannot access files or save files till this process has finished. eg: I can download my email but can't save an email until the computer has finished searching all drives and if I open Windows Explorer, the torch waves back and forth for an eternity. As I have 2 120gb drives divided into several partitions, this can take up to 5 minutes (well it seems that long anyway).
This has never happened before. Surely Windows should remember what is on the system. Is there something I haven't installed, or maybe accidentally turned off? This is becoming very frustrating. Can anyone shed light on this please?
regards,
andy

338933 2005-03-29 00:19:00 This could be Windows Fast Indexing at work. Didn't realise it actually showed you doing this? To disable Fast Indexing, go into My Computer and right click on your C drive > Properties > General Tab. Disable the fast indexing option. Do this for each drive you have.

You haven't installed a desktop indexing program such as Google's new desktop search?

338934 2005-03-29 01:23:00 Thanks Jen.
I have now done this, although the option only appeared on my NTFS drives, not on the FAT 32 drives. I'll see what happens next time i cold start.
Cheers.

338935 2005-03-29 06:58:00 Well Jen,
thanks, but that didn't work. A cold boot produced the same old result. I can't find the fast-indexing tab on any of the fat 32 drive partitions (only 1 partition on the primary drive and all of the secondary drive are NTFS). Am I missing something obvious? I really would like to solve this.
Regards,
andy
